Pearl Jam guitarist pushes bathroom access

04:31 PM PST on Thursday, January 29, 2009
Associated Press

Evening Magazine
Crohn's Disease often forced Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready to leave the stage in the middle of a song.
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready met with state lawmakers in Olympia today.

But he wasn't exactly telling them stories about the rich life of a famous rock star. McCready was talking about the bathroom.

Specifically, he was talking about Crohn's disease, one of several painful digestive disorders that can lead to an extreme need to use the restroom.

McCready says people with disorders like his should be able to use employee-only bathrooms, at retail stores without public restrooms. The Legislature is considering a bill that would mandate restroom access for people with qualifying disorders.

McCready says the intense pain and sudden need for a bathroom can be humiliating for children.

McCready tells lawmakers that he had a "Crohn's attack" shortly before performing a concert with the Rolling Stones. Luckily, he says, the Rolling Stones had bathrooms on stage.

I remember seeing a diagram of the Stones' stage somewhere once. And noticing that there was a bathroom in there too.
I wonder if they get a line going there during Keith's set too.

I have often wondered how they do it - to be on stage for 2 hours day after day after day...at their age... they have to need it sometimes. It is very logical that they have a bathroom integrated to the stage. I wonder where it is.

does Blondie flush the chain for Keith, as well as play guitar for him?

I remember reading an interview with Keith in which he stated that Bill used to go to the "dump", as he called it, for a loooong time in between songs. I think he talked about the steel wheels/urban jungle tour. I reckon they had the toilet "on stage" from that tour on...

Cheers,

Hahaha,, that is sublime. Sweet cruelty. He gets to hold Keith's guitar while Keith is in there, and then has to flush the chain. Maybe do a little windexing while he is in there tidying up.

There must be a line for their toilet as well when Keith sings since only 4 band members are onstage.

As long as he doesn't have to wipe. I'm sure he won't mind.

Jagger is coming out of the toilet - stage right and says "I think I busted a button on my trousers; let's hope they don't fall down"
And everybody together now:
"YOU DON'T WANT MY TROUSERS TO FALL DOWN NOW DO YA?"

winking smiley That post was just a matter of time

For large outside shows, port-a-johns are usually close by for exclusive artist use. It's nothing new. Other than that, one may have to wonder 50 or more yards away from complex staging and backstage hazards to get to their private dressing room/rest room facilities. It could be a 5 minute walk each way.

Guns n Roses, I believe just had a bucket in a closed/curtained off area.

Ozzy had buckets of water, but crew reports are that he just pees his pants and then uses the buckets of water to pour over himself afterwards. Ever wonder why Ozzy has been throwing buckets of water around for the past 10 yrs? And NO...he is not paying homage to the comedian Gallagher.

Sad thing is if the Jonas Brothers did such a thing, a local stagehand would steal the contents and put it on Ebay. Of course you have to stick the local stagehand pass to the bucket.
