Ferry is cheaper, at least for the crossing, but train is far more convenient. The sea is rarely too rough in the summer for the ferry (these boats are 30000 tons or more...). The drive from central Paris, even at european speeds (80-90mph) is 2.5-3 hours. Dover to London is 1.5-2.5 depending on time of day. Mind you, by car, you could always swing through Dartford for a pilgramage..
