I don't think you need a great voice to be good rock singer. Look at Mark Knopfler. Terrible voice but great to listen to. Also, I never thought Elvis had a particularly great voice. He made the most of what he had but he's no Frank Sinatra (or Paul Rodgers if you want to stick to Rock).
