It's best when a band does it from the beginning of a song, the singer just doesn't start singing the song, the crowd does it instead. About all the singer does is perhaps cup his ear to let the crowd know it's OK to sing. The band will completely stop playing but the crowd keeps singing. The real key with new songs is to play ones that are actually....really good live!!!! Not slow ones, not mid-tempo, not complex but ones that have a really good groove (and not necessarily hard rockers either) and are likeable on first listen.
