It's amazing he missed only a few songs in all those years. The band used to record at all kinds of crazy times and off the wall places and he was always there, working on Keith hours. That speaks to enormous patience and also an enjoyment of working on his part along with Keith. It may also be that they didn't turn the tape machine on until he was there.

Agree about Sirius. Inside four hours I heard Can't you Hear me Knocking twice.

Jagger has been a public figure for damn near 60 years. If people think he is going to put together some tribute tour they haven't been paying attention. They'll do these shows because otherwise they'd have to give money back, and then we'll see. I'm guessing they'll continue on until more tragedy strikes them. Maybe that's a noble thing, and I wouldn't a

Very lively discussion. My take is that now that we're absorbing the loss of Charlie, it frees us up to acknowledge the band is over, too, and that creates all sorts of emotions. In one way, the extended fairytale of the Vegas era can now be looked at in a more critical light. There's also fear that this group of musicians, whose brand was built on friendship and loyalty to each other,

I wish they had elected to end it on their own terms. They've lost that opportunity now, I fear. I can't continue to follow a band and watch the members drop off one by one on tour, or, God forbid, on stage.

Beautiful. Pete's a great writer/speaker. He gets to the heart of the matter.

They can carry on as they choose, but for me the band no longer exists. That decision is personal to me. I would guess the families of Keith and Ronnie are perhaps suggesting that it's time. If they feel like going into the studio to finish what they have, that would be interesting. But not touring or even playing a 'final show.' That opportunity is unfortunately gone.

Very sad. The band might continue on, which is their choice, but for me it's over. I wish they could have ended on their own terms.

Some great comments in here. I thought about this in the context of the Andy Summers documentary about The Police, which I saw this week. From watching footage throughout their careers, it was clear the band members a) didn't really like each other ... my wife said they actually seem to disdain each other, and b) they were full of their own self-importance. At some level, the Stones have g

I enjoy that video and find the interaction between Mick and Keith, especially when Keith puts his arm on his shoulder, to be quite intimate and touching. Their differences were more professional than personal, in my view. Even in the 80s, I think they loved each other. From Mick's point of view, he probably found drunk/coked up Keith much more problematic than high/nodding Keith. Mick wan

Get used to it. This is how it's going to end. There won't be a last show and a final bow. One of the remaining three will be unable to carry on and it will be over.

Their backup singers the past 30 years have jazz chops. They have added a lot to a few of Keith's Stones solo numbers and seem to enjoy backing him.

QuoteStoneage I don't get the drama here. No one here calls the shots. If you don't fancy the band without Charlie, fine, just don't go to the concerts. Problem solved. They are in their 80s soon. What they do by now doesn't matter to me that much. They have been on overtime for quite a while now. It is what it is: 60s and 70s nostalgia for a rich, older audience. Yeah, if

Quoteterraplane It's 4/4 time. They come in after the four in the count in but a little earlier than the first beat of the first bar. That sounds right to me.

Very few people know he won't be there. It was a minor, one-day story... you'd really have to be following the Stones on social media to hear about it.

Contract speculation: - They've already spent advance money. - A lot of people depend on them for income. They're running a business. - I'm going to guess that the promoters/insurance people would settle for a Keith/Ronnie band if Keith couldn't go, but Keith has himself written in to the contracts as a must-have clause. I'm curious/nervous about how it will go.

QuoteBeast QuoteDGA35 I wonder if he's going to play the songs in his style or try to copy Charlie's style? Either way, I'm betting on him being lambasted around here. I don't envy him for that. I'm sure they'll tell him to play it like he feels it.

QuoteStoneage If Bill was replaceable then are Charlie and Ron. Basically this is what happens when you don't know when to stop. There is no such thing as a never ending tour. Yep, they long ago decided to tour as long as possible. Probably as far back as when Brian died, and Mick said, 'It goes on.' Or in 1989 when they re-formed. I have mixed feelings. On one hand it would be

This type of discussion is the primary reason I love this site. My wife will sometimes ask me, 'What are you reading over there,' and I'll say, 'There's a great discussion about what trousers Keith was wearing when he was arrested in Arkansas in 1975.'

This is a shock, although probably shouldn't be. Wishing Charlie a return to health. This feels like the beginning of the end and takes away their opportunity to stop on their own terms. Maybe best to flip the script and focus on being grateful Mick, Keith and Charlie have been together all these years.
