Hi ! Just found this, do not know what it's worth. But thought some of us would love to have a look.

Got To Be Worked On! [Rover Records, 1CD]
Various Olympic Studios Sessions 1966-1970

These days aspiring bootleggers have many sources to choose from to compile a new release, as Rover Records has done with this brand new 2007 bootleg. Stones sessions can be found on Yellow Dog's Black Box, Invasion Unlimited's series of outtakes, Scorpio's Time Trips, the numerous Japanese labels that specialise in repackaging. What's needed then is a "concept". Rover Records has come up with a nice idea of putting together tracks that "could have, should have" been released except some tracks "got to be worked on!" Sound quality on this boot is seriously fantastic.

Rover has focused on The Stones' brilliant period from 1966 to 1970 when Brian Jones was still coherent, creative and committed, at least half the time. The sessions span from Their Satanic Majesties, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed to Sticky Fingers. Practically everything here has been released before say some reviewers but to these ears, if they have, I have not heard them in this quality. Perhaps the most bootlegged tracks here are the ones from the Beggar's album - outtakes of Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, Factory Girl, Dear Doctor and No Expectations. Coming a close second are the outtakes from Sticky Fingers.

The two tracks that make their debut appearance on bootleg are Version 3 of Get Yourself Together and perhaps Yesterday's Papers. Here's a review from the net by "Another": "The first tracks are produced by Andrew Oldham: "Get Yourself Together" features Stu on piano and ends with Charlie still banging on the drums, while "Yesterday's Papers" has Jagger almost cracking in laughs while singing. "Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue" is the early take of "Dandelion" with Keith Richards on vocals. "Old King Cole" is an instrumental early take of "We Love You", produced by Glyn Johns. With "Child Of The Moon" that features Nicky Hopkins on this alternate mix version enters Jimmy Miller in the production seat.

"The version of "Jumping Jack Flash" comes from the first take recorded live in the studio, used for the promo film (without make up); on "Pays Your Dues" there is Rick Grech on electric violin while Roger Chapman is on background vocals. "Stray Cat Blues" is an alternate mix with ad lib vocals, louder bass and lead guitar. "No Expectations" feature Nicky Hopkins on piano and Stu on organ and starts with some studio dialogue, while you can hear Jagger mumbling the melody during the song. On "You Got The Silver" never have the acoustic guitars sound so wide open. "Wild Horses #1" is the 4th version which is a reworked take of the 3rd version without piano. Ry Cooder is on guitar on "Sister Morphine" while the alternate take of "Gimme Shelter" has no backing vocals. Nicky Hopkins' piano introduces differently "Loving Cup", the take of "Bitch" is the alternate mix, second version. No sax is featured on "Brown Sugar" and Jim Dickinson is featured on tack piano in the second version of "Wild Horses"."

It reads like an "insider" doing the review. Thanks muchly.

All tracks were recorded at London's Olympic Studios except the final two, Brown Sugar and Wild Horses, which were recorded at Muscle Shoals. By the way, it appears Rover Records is a European label.

Only one caveat. Our CD-R copy came from a silver disc. But when run through Audacity, the spectral analysis suggests it is MP3 sourced. Can anyone with a copy of the silver, confirm?

From [boot-review.com] :

Got To Be Worked On! (Rover Records RR CD001)

Get Yourself Together, Yesterday’s Papers, Sometimes Happy Sometimes Blue (early version), Old King Cole (early version of We Love You), Child Of The Moon, Jumping Jack Flash, Pay Your Dues (early version of Street Fighting Man), Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, Factory Girl, Dear Doctor, No Expectations, You Got The Silver, While Horses #1, Sister Morphine, Gimme Shelter, Loving Cup, Dead Flowers, Bitch, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses #2

There have been a glut of Rolling Stones outtakes being released of late, and Got To Be Worked On! on Rover Records is a competent collection. The sound quality varies depending on the source, but they are all very good to excellent sounding, professionally recorded outtakes. Some of the tracks sound rather hissy, although this is due to the original source material. The first track on this collection is an unreleased song called “I Can See It (aka Get Yourself Together).” It was recorded in August, 1966 during the Between The Buttons sessions and overdubbed in November. The sound quality is excellent but a bit hissy. With the fuzz on the guitar and bombastic drums, it sounds like the Stones trying to imitate the Kinks. The following two songs date from the same sessions and are basic run throughs of “Yesterday’s Papers” and an early version of “Dandelion.” “Old King Cole” is an instrumental rehearsal for the song “We Love You.” “Child Of The Moon” was recorded in March, 1968 and this is an alternate mix of the final product. “Jumping Jack Flash” is from the promo film recorded on April 27th, 1968 and comes straight from the video. This version is much more raw than the final and includes extra “whoops” at the beginning. “Street Fighting Man” an instrumental version recorded in February 1968 at Keith Richards’ home under the title “Primo Grande.” The first attempts in the studio were a month later at Olympic Studio. The first instrumental run through was again referred to as “Primo Grande.”

The first attempt at recording it with lyrics was at the same sessions under the title “Pay Your Dues” and features Nicky Hopkins on piano, Dave Mason on shenhani, Rick Grech on electric violin and backing vocals provided by Jim King and Roger Chapman. The only difference in the instrumental arrangement between this and the commercial version is the lack of violin. The original lyrics are quite strange and the chorus says, “Now did everybody pay their dues? / Now did end up with tribal blues? / All the braves and squaws and the maids and the whores / Did, everybody pay their dues?” “Stray Cat Blues” dates from Olympic Studio on April 3rd, 1968. This is a early alternate mix with additional vocals and louder bass and lead guitar. “Parachute Woman” comes from a session on March 25th, 1968, and this track is an early mix of the second take with double tracked vocals. both “Factory Girl,” “Dear Doctor,” and “No Expectations” originate from the same sessions in May, 1968 at Olympic Studio. “Factory Girl” is a take different from the Beggar’s Banquet version and features Rick Grech on fiddle, Rocky Dijon on congas and Dave Mason on mandolin. The fiddle is mixed differently. “Dear Doctor” is the first take with different lead vocals than the commercial version. “No Expectations” begins with Jagger speaking to Stu before the song begins. This outtake appears on Time Trip and other titles, but Rover have a version lasting four minutes twenty-one seconds and contains the final verse which are omitted from other titles. “You Got The Silver” comes from February 16th, 1969 and this is the ubiquitous take with Mick on vocals. The first of two takes of “Wild Horses” on Got To Be Worked On! was recorded in December, 1969 at Olympic Studio and is a remix of the Shelly version of the song but without piano.

“Sister Morphine” is the third version of the song recorded at Olympic in March 1969 (and not 1968 as mentioned in the liner notes). The following track “Gimme Shelter” comes from the sessions as “Sister Morphine” and this is the popular take from March 15th that features Keith on vocals, Nicky Hopkins on piano and Jimmy Miller on percussion. There also are no backing vocals as on the final track. “Loving Cup” comes from the Olympic Studio sessions from April 17th to July 2nd, and this take features a different piano introduction. “Dead Flowers” comes from a session on April 24th, 1970 at Olympic Studios and this take is the commercial version but with a slightly different mix. “Bitch” was recorded in late October 1970 at Stargroves with the Mobile Record Unit and mixed at Olympic Sound soon afterwards. This is the second version which is the one used on Sticky Fingers but with a different mix. “Brown Sugar” was recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama several days before the concert at Altamont. This is the second version (“Decca acetate”) which has no saxophone and Ian Stewart playing piano. Finally, this take of “Wild Horses” dates from the same time and place as the preceding track. This features Jim Dickinson on tack piano and this tape was given as a demo to Gram Parsons. Besides the complete "No Expectations," there isn't much on here that hasn't been featured on many other releases. The title is packaged in a standard jewel case with the artwork printed on glossy paper with black and white photographs of the band in the studio. There are detailed notes for each track giving reasonably accurate information concerning the song's origin which is a plus. Overall this isn't a bad summary of Stones outtakes for those who don't have this material elsewhere. (GS)

No,

This track has been already released many years ago on "Who The hate Is Brian Jones".
So, nothing new.

It looks like they took the 1967 Olympic Studio session pics that I posted. ;-)

I bought this as a silver CD from an ebay seller in the USA, it's a nice bootleg compilation really.

>“No Expectations” begins with Jagger speaking to Stu before the song begins. This outtake appears on Time Trip and other titles, but Rover have a version lasting four minutes twenty-one seconds and contains the final verse which are omitted from other titles.''<

It's Keith talking, but anyway...

People should note that the outtake version of No Expectations is an alternative version, ie the same incomplete version heard on Time Trip 4, but where that alternative take ends, someone has edited on the officially released album version making for a complete 'fake' take. I think this is the case with all of the alternative NE's found on popular bootlegs like RSVP etc.

its a pleasent complation, but it gets more attention than it deserves because theres actually nothing new here. some tracks are harder to find than others, but that does not change the fact that Rover offers nothing new.

what bugs me is the remark that the CD is obviously mp3 - sourced. I did not analyze it, but if its indeed true, it seems that Rover just used mp3 sources downloaded from the net to manufacture a silver CD. this is not ok with me. in fact its a sacrilege. I would not want to shell out money for a silver CD with lossy sources.

What's worse alimente, is that if the original mp3-sourced cdr is then reconverted to mp3 another stage of lossyness is introduced. I have absolutely nothing against mp3s, but an mp3 of an mp3 is not good at all...

Is it the case that an mp3 file (say 192kbps) when re-saved elsewhere at the same bitrate will incur another stage of lossyness with more degradation from the original file. Is this the same as expanding the file to wav (for editing say) then re-saving at the original bitrate will this incur more loss of the original file information.

I do not believe that the original silver edition is mp3 sourced. The artwork on [boot-review.com] does not say "mp3 version" like the artwork on [www.bigozine2.com] which seems to be edited by someone who got the mp3 files from someone and re-created the disc from mp3 sources.

Hi
I have pasted in the reviews from Hot Wacks regarding this title, I have a copy and the sound quality is far in front of any of the versions I have had before...no one has said it offers anything new...just better and clearer versions.

REVIEW:

You'll get two reviews in one post on this one. Below is RICCAR99's review as well.

This is an interesting release/compilation from newcomer Rover Records and plays like a very well-thoughtout official release for a change. 'The Rover' even offers up the correct track sequencing in the the liner notes of the insert if you would like to program your player to listen to them chronologically. It should be noted that all of this material has been previously released, except for Track 1 which is version 3 of "Get Yourself Together" - at least I couldn't confirm this one anywhere. Version 1 appears on Disc 2 of Yellow Dog's Black Box and Version 2 on Disc 1. Very interesting and what fidelity on all of these tracks! I would say we have upgrades on virtually all aside from the Beggar's Banquet outtakes which are comparible to what Sister Morphine and even Scorpio has presented on their Time Trip titles which are stellar and hard to improve on anyway. It sounds like the entire compilation is sourced from the Olympic Studios master tapes providing superb natural sound throughout.

The emphasis on this collection is all on the clarity of the tracks. When compared to the earlier CD collections from Yellow Dog and Scorpio which still sound pretty damn good today, this new disc from Rover Records does stand out. "Pay Your Dues" has never sounded better as well as this Version 1 of "Loving Cup" and the Alternate/Version 2 of "Dead Flowers". "Gimme Shelter" Version 1 is available on both Disc 4 (Millenium Edition) of The Black Box from Yellow Dog - and on Scorpio's Time Trip Vol. 4 but the quality here surpasses those as there is no compression. They are clean, fresh, and you cannot help but keep inching up the volume.

There are 2 things that keep this new disc from being perfect. The placement of the last track, "Wild Horses #2", comes off like an afterthought. But a welcome one as it's like a bonus track you could say. And I would have wrapped this rascal in better quality packaging. There's nothing wrong with the creative decisions on the photography and such, though I would rather have a tracklisting on the back panel of the release vs. the back of the insert inside....it's just that the paper and printing quality could be nicer for such a sweet collection. The detailed track notes inside are nice and helpful but again accentuate the annoying size of the CD releases and can be kind of hard to read. Thankfully it's black print on the white paper so the contrast is stark but the small type combined with the font used makes it slightly tricky for us geezers. Just my opinion as this is one of those discs you insist your friends throw in their players right away. These tracks just play through like they were meant to be heard in this manner. I must have listened to this twice a day over the past week. I didn't detract much from the scoring around the board and even raised my initial grading as this one has hooks. Plus the Stones sound good when they are sloppy! A little taken off on the packaging is about it, but I do love the photography The Rover has sourced for this title.

For newbies who may not have the Time Trip stuff or The Black Box, and for the jaded who have all of this several times over...you will want to seek out Got To Be Worked On!...you'll be hooked all over again too. It stands up completely on its' own. And it stands out from the rest of the pack in terms of consistency of quality and the high standards we all seek in our quest to own the best.

Review by Riccar99

Sound: 10 / Packaging: 10 / Performance: 10

A new label coming from Old Europe provides some of the best studio tracks of the Stones recorded during the 66-70 years mostly at the London Olympic Sound Studios with the exception of the last two songs that come from Muscle Shoals, Florence, Alabama. Packaging is superb, albeit all shots in black & white, on front and back covers with a rich detailed insert, crafted by a renown artist from Down Under. The first tracks are produced by Andrew Oldham:"Get Yourself Together" features Stu on piano and ends with Charlie still banging on the drums, while "Yesterday s Papers" has Jagger almost cracking in laughs while singing. The version of "Jumping Jack Flash" comes from the first take recorded live in the studio, used for the promo film (without make up); on "Pays Your Dues" there is Rick Grech on electric violin while Roger Chapman is on background vocals. "Stray Cat Blues" is an alternate mix with ad lib vocals, louder bass & lead guitar. "No Expectations" feature Nicky Hopkins on piano and Stu on organ and starts with some studio dialogue, while you can hear Jagger mumbling the melody during the song. On "You Got The Silver" never the acoustic guitars did sound so wide open. "Wild Horses #1" is the 4th version which is a reworked take of the 3rd version without piano. Ry Cooder is on guitar on "Sister Morphine" while the alternate take of "Gimme Shelter" has no backing vocals. Nicky Hopkins piano introduces differently "Loving Cup", the take of "Bitch" is the alternate mix second version. No sax is featured on "Brown Sugar" and Jim Dickinson is featured on tack piano in the second version of "Wild Horses". Most of these alternate versions have been already known to Stones collectors but this time they come in pristine condition from master recordings, if the Stones do not want to dig in their vaults we are glad somebody else will! The packaging is superb too with never seen photos of the London sessions and a very informative booklet that spreads out when the front cover is taken from its trailer.

riccar99: On further hearing both Got youself together and Yesterday;s Papers are new versions never heard before.

Yes rumple, if you edit an mp3 & then re-encode it as another mp3 you will lose quality. However, you may not hear it. I have a modest stereo system & there are cases where I can't tell the difference between mp3 & wav files of the same disc.

Encoding an mp3 as a wav won't increase the quality. Once the information is lost you can't recover it. For instance, mp3s typically discard any audio info above about 16kHz, you need a frequency analyser to see this. Even if you encode this to wav there will still be nothing above 16kHz.

There is much debate in regard to mp3/wav & I don't get involved. When posting tho, I will ensure that I let everyone know what they are getting.

I could be wrong but I thougth this version of "Get Yourself Together" was first available on Session Impossible Vol 1 or 2. As far as "Pay Your Dues" I 've never heard a better version than what was released on "Necrophelia". This was an official album pulled after a few pressings due to Klein bickering over Oldhams selections as it was supposed to be a follow-up to Hot Rocks. Erik, do you think most of the cleanest versions have been pulled from this album?

Thanks for asking Scottkeef, yes the cleanest versions of the Necrophilia songs started circulating after the acetates of that record was sold at auctions.
I do not have this "Got To Be Worked On" bootleg.
But please keep in mind that both Hot Wacks and Bootreview are not experts at all - and the same reviewer that praised this GotToBeWorkedOn release above, claimed that SODDs Edinburgh 82 + Vancouver 72 releases were from totally new excellent sources; while in reality they're just plain trashy re-releases drenched in the most annoying EQ carpet....not new...or best sources at all.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Hot Wacks people get their high heels up by some EQ-computerwork this time as well.
Then again; I haven't checked out this boot....so what do I know ?

Erik, I also saw where SODD claims their HYde Park 69 is from a new source and claimed their LEEDS 71 is a ALL stereo recording. And you know if there was a real STEREO Leeds everybody would be all over it. Thats why I asked the question on this board previously if it was genuine. Glad I did before I shelled out anymore money for yet another so called upgrade. Anyway I downloaded "Got To Be Worked On" from a blogspot buts its mp3.For what its worth its seems really tweaked up and the Pay your Dues has the vinyl pop in exactly the same place as my Necrophelia! Many of the Beggars cuts seem to be sourced from SisMorph's Outtakes cd. Its not a bad cd I guess for new collectors but the practice of rehashing these common outs is really getting boring (and expensive if one gets gullible). Now I also want to make it clear again I listened to it in mp3 format but just how much remastering can be done?!!!

yes, the vinyl pop! noticed that too! so much for the claim that Got To Be Worked On seems to come from the actual master tapes. wonder why all these socalled remaster experts fail to come up with a version that has this ONE annoying pop removed!!!

the version of Yesterdays papers has been booted multiple times in ex quality. the Get yourself together has been heard before w/o the "intro talk", I believe. Godfathers recent "Through the past..." collections are in similar ex. quality. I would recommend this for the fan thats just starting but theres definitely nothing worth reinvesting for the seasoned collector. Thanks for the link j.b. goode for Dues!!
