Opinions: Coventry Farewell Tour '71
Date: April 30, 2007 00:14
Anybody else heard this?
It's a really good performance. A little ragged and the sound is not great, but with the exception of Mick starting on the wrong beat and staying on it throughout the first verse and chorus of "Street Fighting Man", I have to say its' a much better show that I had expected. Why is this recording so rare?
Also, does anybody know if this is the first or second show? One online source says its' the 2nd but Nico Zentgraf has the setlist listed for the 1st show and not the second, leading one to think that Nico at least believes this to be the 1st show.

It's funny that I've heard relatively little about this recording. Erik says most of us probably have it, but I'd never seen it on anybody's list that I've traded with. It's probably not that rare among hardcore fans.
Performance wise, this is better than the famed Leeds show. At least in my opinion it is.
I've seen lots of negative things written about this tour.....sloppy performances and stuff. And it may be true overall, but this was a hot performance right out of the gate.
BTW, Erik......what do you think the best source for the 7/25/72 New York show is? "The Great Lost Live Album"? Or the 2nd source that's on the Rocks Off tracker right now? Or is there a better one than those two?

With all the hoopla about Leeds being a must-have, in the top 10, etc. I must admit I've never been enamoured with it. Yes it's a rare snbd quality example of those early days, but I remember when I got it thinking: this is really sloppy.
My judgement of those early shows is based on MR, it's roughly in the middle, they've had time to settle down, does it cook? Yes, Coventry cooks.

I saw both the Coventry 1971 shows.
"Prodigal Son" was not played at the 1st Show but was played at the 2nd Show.
After 36 years I have never yet found a recording of the 2nd Show...so if its out there it would be good to see it posted.
This is my first post so..............Hope this helps.
