If you want more info on FLAC, click this link: [flac.sourceforge.net]

Flac and Shn files are lossless files while MP3 are lossy...anything that is lossless (flac, shn) sounds almost identical if not identical to a master audience tape or sbd reel. MP3 is compressed audio and loses sound quality due to compression...

For IPOD's, MP3's are GREAT! For your home and car stereo's, converting the FLAC file to a WAV file and ripping onto a CDR will give you CD quality audio...if its a soundboard source, it would sound just as good as any store bought live album on the market today...

Download the Flac program which is located in the website I sent you...if you have windows, use the "FLAC for Windows with installer" option...

Open the Flac program, select the flac file in the folder where your audio is stored and click "decode." Its a very simple process....trust me! After the 1st time you do it, it will be like clockwork to you...

jamesfdouglas:

What's key to understand is the MP3 version of a song is a compressed version that has discarded musical content that cannot be retrieved. A 320 KB/s encoded MP3 contains about 1/5 of the musical content of the original version of the song.

In the case of FLAC files, no information is lost when compared to the original version but the FLAC file has the advantage of being a smaller file for upload and download purposes,(about 60 ~ 70 percent size of WAV file) and when converted to a WAV file, prior to burning to CDR, is virtually identical in sound quality. You then have a true CDR copy of the original bootleg.

Besides, you can always create an MP3 version from your WAV files to MP3 version later on for use on an ipod. As for MP3, the higher the bitrate, the better the sound quality. You will want to use either 256 KB/s or 320 KB/s whenever possible for the ipod to retain the maximum amount of music information with the least amount of sound degradation.

Remember, if you start with MP3, you cannot regain the lost musical content.
