I have only done the conversion on a MAC, using Toast. Basically running audio out of my amplifier into my MAC. Start the turntable and the program digitizes the sound. There are filters to tweak the sound, which some vinyl needs to keep it from sounding too flat. There are also filters for reducing hiss and cracks.
You then end up with an AIFF file, which can be reduced to MP3.
I think the software is around $79 US, and pretty easy to use. For some old vinyl that is simply not available in CD, it is worth using.
