Bill WYMAN and Charlie WATTS
Coming together
for A.R.M.S
(Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis)
Benefit-concerts
(20th September – 9th December 1983)

This series presents the shows in which Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts teamed up in 1983 to support a string of charity concerts (2 in London and 9 in the US). Our original intention was to present the A.R.M.S. shows (see below) but since the players (and the songs played) were almost the same for the charity gala organized for the Prince Of Wales Trust on September 21 we decided to include it in this series.
In 1983, Ronnie Lane’s girlfriend Boo Oldfield contacted Glyn Johns with a view to organizing a concert to help fund Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis. Johns was already arranging Clapton's Command Performance for Prince Charles so they decided to book the Royal Albert Hall for a further two nights and host a benefit concert. The first ARMS Charity Concerts (and initially planned to be the only) event took place at the Royal Albert Hall on September 20, 1983, with subsequent dates occurring in the United States, with slightly different lineups of musicians.
Thanks to those who recorded and shared their recordings, to BT2G for his suggestions and the available video versions he will add to complement this series and to nzb for his irreplaceable help.

ALL STAR BAND
2nd DECember 1983
SAN FRANCISCO Cow Palace
Benefit-concert for A.R.M.S. (Action For Research Into Multiple Sclerosis).

2nd December 1983: ALL STAR BAND. San Francisco, California, Cow Palace
Musicians: CW (dr)/BW (bass)/Eric Clapton (gtr, voc)/Jimmy Page (gtr)/Jeff Beck (gtr)/ Kenney Jones (dr)/Andy Fairweather Low (gtr, voc)/Chris Stainton (keyb/bvoc)/Ray Cooper (perc)/ Simon Phillips (dr)/Ronnie Lane (voc on Goodnight Irene)/Ian Stewart (p on Boogie Mama)/Joe Cocker (voc)/Paul Rodgers (voc, gtr)/Fernando Saunders (bass)/ James Hooker (keyb)/Jan Hammer (keyb)

For this show we have 3 sources:
Source #1 can be found on ‘San Francisco December 1983’ (Heart Breakers HB-809-1/2). Initially it was taped by ‘Brother Tom’: the infos for it are in the ‘docs’ folder (sorry I don’t have the exact lineage: might be Dime or TTD?), it’s a good lossless recording.
Source #2 was taped by JEMS (the infos are in the ‘docs’ folder). It’s a good lossless audience but not as good as the one by Brother Tom.
Source #3 is the video soundtrack. The sound is good, with more stereo effects but it’s lossy.

Our idea is to post 2 versions:
6a: source #1
6b: merges of sources #1 and #3: A pro-shot video of the whole show exists. This merged version will be used by BlueTurns2Grey in his video reworking project.

Vol 06b:
Here you will find the merges version between
- on the left channel: the source #3 used as reference (it’s a new video rip)
- on the right channel: the reworked version of volume 06a
This reworked audio was synchronized with the video by BT2G and will be posted separately.

CD1:
Part I: Eric Clapton-set:
01 - Band introduction
Merged except for the first 35 seconds coming solely from 06a
02 - Everybody Oughta Make A Change
03 - Lay Down Sally (Andy Fairweather Low on guitar)
04 - Wonderful Tonight
05 - Rita Mae
06 - Sad Sad Day/Ramblin’ On My Mind / Have You Ever Loved A Woman
07 - Cocaine

Part II: Joe Cocker-set with Eric Clapton:
08 - Don’t Talk To Me
09 - Watching The River Flow
10 - Worried Life Blues
11 - You Are So Beautiful
12 - Seven Days
merged except for the last 24 seconds which are solely coming from the other source (not in the video!)
13 - Feelin’ Alright (BW on bvoc)
merged except for the last 19 seconds which are solely coming from the video
short intermission

CD2:
Part III: Jeff Beck-set:
01 - Star Cycle
merged except for the first 1’13 min. which is solely coming from the video
02 - The Pump
03 - Definitely Maybe
04 - Blue Wind
merged except for the last 9 seconds coming solely from the video
05 - People Get Ready (Andy Fairweather Low on vocals)
06 - Going Down (Andy Fairweather Low on vocals)
merged except for the last 39 seconds which are solely coming from the video

Part IV: Jimmy Page-set:
07 - Prelude
merged except for the first 1’31 are which are solely coming from the video
08 - Who’s To Blame (Paul Rodgers on vocals)
09 - City Sirens (Paul Rodgers on vocals)
10 - Boogie Mama (Paul Rodgers on vocals and guitar, Stu on piano)
There’s a short gap before the next track
11 - Midnight Moonlight (Paul Rodgers on vocals)
12 - Stairway To Heaven (Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck on guitar)
the encores are preceded by a long intermission: it was cut at different times in the two sources. I kept the merged parts but they are interrupted by two fade ins/outs, one at 9’42 and the other at 9’58.

CD3:
Part VI: Encores - all together:
01 - Layla
merged except for the last 2 minutes of banter which are solely coming from the video
02 - With A Little Help From My Friends
03 - Goodnight Irene (Ronnie Lane on vocals)
merged except for the last minute which is solely coming from the video

Note:
BW & CW play only on CD1 and CD3.

As usual all the infos are coming from Nico Zentgraf's Rolling Stones Complete Works Database: [www.nzentgraf.de]
