Does a recording only have 'worth' if you can trade or torrent it?
Doesn't it have worth if it is just there for you to listen to the music?

Just take a lossless recording and convert to mp3 and compare using more than $3 earbud or a $5 Bluetooth speaker. If that's your playback k source, then you probably can't tell the difference. Going back to the food analogy if you are cooking spam and potatoes with just salt it makes no difference if you cook it in a microwave or homecooked. On the otherhand if you are taking a piece of fresh fish with fresh veggies, garlic and other spices and cook it properly it will taste better than thrown in a microwave. Many (most) are too lazy or not interested in knowing the difference.
My playback source is a 1980s Technics hifi amplifier with hifi speakers in my living room. My problem is a different one. I am not that young anymore and the frequency cut of my own ears is below that of a lossy recording. So what should I hear then? Don't know how old you are but everyone will "suffer" this somewhen. The only possibility to escape this is dying earlier.(But I doubt that this is the better way...) The good thing is you don't notice the loss since it comes very slowly.
There are of course more limitations in a lossy recording, especially at a low bitrate, like artefacts that sound like swishing noises or tinny sound, regarding this you are right!

A 40 year old Technics hi-fi with 40 year old speakers probably part of the problem too.
Complete nonsense! I finish this useless discussion here.
