19890425-27 Rolling Stones in the AIR [reworked audio & video]


In April 1989, the Rolling Stones recorded tracks for their upcoming Steel Wheels album. They filmed this video partly for their “25x5” document at AIR Studios in Montserrat. Through the generosity of imthemastah, we can enjoy a look into these legendary sessions at AIR Studios.

In September 1989, a disaster happened when Hurricane Hugo hit the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. Just six years later, the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted. Layers of ash destroyed huge parts of the island, including the legendary AIR studio. We are fortunate to have this document from a time before nature changed Monteserrat forever!

This gem, compliments of imthemastah was another significant project for us collectors. After doing the Voodoo Lounge overdub project, we worked together again to present this rarity as best we could.

While StonyRoad was reworking the audio, and ExileStones was creating artwork, I did my part working on the video footage (aspect ratio, declick, adjust colors, insert overlays, new audio synch, deleted countless stills, gaps and ‘winding tape’ parts).

We present these reworked files, which are now more listenable and watchable. Here’s the video with a new sound and reworked footage. We also have a very special bonus from the same sessions.

Some parts (very few) have overlays from better video sources that were used for TV documents in 1989. In chapter VII, where Mick is singing “Mixed Emotions” in falsetto, the Writing Sessions has overlays filmed from a different angle. You can find the raw version as a bonus at the end of the video.

thanks to everyone

this was really interesting to watch makes me wonder how much more footage of them in the studio is out there

i remember a documentary a few years ago using a very short clip of them in the studio from the dirty work sessions (pathe marconi?)

anyone know how much footage was shot during those sessions and why?

20240205: Revised info & art is available. The dinner and the recording session seemed to be filmed on one day, the 25th of April in 1989. The session might have ended after midnight, so 25th until 26th might also be correct. Revised art and info files can be downloaded seperately.


20240212: After some considerations, it is much more likely that the correct recording date, as initially described, was April 25th to 27th, 1989. Therefore please use the old info files.
