I have one of those renovated 240 GB iPods, and I've almost filled it up. There seems to be no current MP3 player able to satisfy all my music needs. I don't want to just upload everything to the cloud or just only play everything by pulling up iTunes on my desktop. The time has come for people to create MP3 players in the 250-500 GB range. Clearly Apple is not interested in doing that, so other companies need to step up.
You could also try to replace the 1.8" HDD of the iPod Classic with a 1 TB mSATA-SSD via adapter. Some people have done it, reports are to find in the Internet via search engine: "ipod classic ssd mod".

Basically you could connect a 2 TB SSD to an USB-Port, but the issue is the power-consumption of the SSD - they need at the moment more than the 2.5 Watt (5 Volt, 500 mA) which a USB 2.0 port can deliver (USB 3.0: 4.5 Watt, USB 3.1: up to 100 Watt). A solution could be to use a USB-case with a connector for an external power supply.

Quote JohnnyBGoode I have not tried, but I wonder if a flash drive would work in the car with a usb, if the car has one?
Yes , If the USB port on your car audio system works as an audio input. Some do,some don't. Some USB ports are only for power charging , others work as audio inputs.
You would have to refer to the specification(s) of your car audio system.
