1968 Beggar's Banquet Studio Outtakes & Rarities Vol.4 ®Remastered by Teague Raw
Volume 3 is devoted to Satanic Sessions far from complete (12 hours of recording to compare), I propose now to look at the Beggar's Banquet Sessions. 53 tracks recorded during the year 1968, to 3 hours 35 of original music. That should satisfy your delicate ears!
The first disc opens with 11 catches of various 'Jig-Saw Puzzle' instrumentals versions, I admit it's a bit boring, but the chronological order so decided. Especially because the title is long and slow, if you skip to track 12, it would be understandable. Next comes 'Parachute Woman' in a slightly different mix of the album version, and then his electrified version (comes from Rock'N'Roll Circus). This is followed by a delicious acoustic version and instrumental 'Child Of The Moon' where the piano is in first place, then the backing track version from the title as we know it on the single. The demo of 'Street Fighting Man' which follows is just as exhilarating as its final version, but the sound is a little 'tin can'. The first CD ends with the first take of Stray Cat Blues, with false start and without the gritty guitar solo at the end.
The cd2 opens with the extraordinary introduction of 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'in its backing track (but with chorus), two alternative versions below: the promo single, whose sound quality is not very famous but where Mick launches 'yeah yeah' at the intro, then, the piece as can be heard in the promotional video, where only the vocals are different, the quality bit disappointing. Taking IV 'Street Fighting Man' has a longer outro than the album version. As for 'No Expectation it offers two different takes, then an electrical variant whose sound quality is not great. Comes after 'Factory Girl' in the mix of fiddle significantly different. Takes after three of 'Dear Doctor'. The first unreleased title finally arrives, although published in its acoustic version of 'Metamorphosis', here, the accompaniment is by the electric guitar. The sweet ballad 'Blood Red Wine' was never published, nor is 'Still A Fool' (aka Catfish / Two Train Blues) borrowed from McKinley Morganfield, nor happens next 'Give Me A Hamburger To Go' (aka Stuck Out All Alone). Then tumbles 'Prodigal Son', a cover of Rev. Robert Wilkins. The final version of 'Jig-saw puzzle is presented without overdubs voice. The cd2 ends with the fast 'Highway Child' (aka Highway Bound, The Vulture), the date and place of recording remains uncertain, the title is also completely new.
The last cd starts on various 'Symathy For The Devil' takes, the song evolves during 36 minutes, these versions are from the movie 'One + One' directed by Swiss filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. Two unreleased instrumental jams 'London Jam "and" Untitled Jam' follow. Then it is 'Family', as they read on the acoustic guitar, first without bass and vocals overdubs, and then as published in 'Metamorhosis'. The Olympic sessions ends with 'Salt Of The Earth' unmixed. The CD is completed with five versions of 'Memo from Turner' title for the film 'Performance'. First we hear the demo version of Mick Jagger with other musicians as the Rolling Stones, the drums introduction is well above the published version follows. The song was then created by all the Stones, in a more rock style, first with words a little different (I dared to draw on the remastered version of Cap'tain Acid, my apologies, it was very good), and published in 'Metamorphosis'
I paid great attention to the choice of my sources, improved sound presence so we can all enjoy a quality listening none. I hope you have in hand the best of what has never been proposed for the 1968 sessions. Treat yourself, and stop looking elsewhere.
