Help with Street Fighting Man (Decca single)
Posted by: blakeeik ()

Can anyone please confirm the following attributes of this Decca single?

1) It was released in July 1971, not 1970 (wikipedia has 1970 [en.wikipedia.org])
2) It was the LP version and ONLY released in stereo?
3) Surprise Surprise was in fake stereo.
4) The B-side of F 13195, Everybody Needs Somebody to Love (long version), was in STEREO, not mono? [www.45cat.com]
5) Was this the same stereo mix as from the complilation album Rock'n'Rolling Stones?

Thanks....and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Thanks for confirming that Britney. Just makes me more disappointed in the 2005 box set that reissued it in mono, even thought the original bside was in stereo!

thanks hulloder, but that is not an official release! smiling smiley

I'm not asking for the track itself, just the information.... I did not even know that Decca released any Stones singles in stereo as early as 1971!

Hi blackeeik,

on your page : [www.45cat.com] , it confirms july 71 and says that "surprise, surprise" was electronically reprocessed for stereo

on atwiki,it says :
UK 7"MAXI SINGLE (DECCA F 13195) 6.25.1971
1 Street Fighting Man (From LP-BEGGARS BANQUET)
2 Surprise, Surprise
3 Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (long take) (From LP-THE ROLLING STONES NO.2)

and i've just found this page :

[lukpac.org]

it says :
Everybody Needs Somebody To Love

stereo on:
Rock'n'Rolling Stones (Decca LP 6835 121)
Rock'n'Rolling Stones (Decca LP SKL 5149)
Rock'n'Rolling Stones (Decca LP SLK 16781-P, Germany)
Stones Story vol 2 (Decca LP NL 6640.030)
Rolling Stones [Greatest Hits] (SuperStar LP SU-1005, Italy)
time: 5:07
recording date/location: 10/27/64 RCA Studios, Hollywood
notes: Recorded at RCA. This is the longer version, which appeared on the UK No. 2 LP. It shows up on the No. 2 and ABKCO Now! CDs as well as the More Hot Rocks SACD in mono. Left: drums, bass, rhythm guitar, piano. Center: vocals. Right: lead guitar, tambourine, backing vocals, handclaps.

The only stereo mix to be released on vinyl and NOT be released on CD. The German copy of Rock'n'Rolling Stones runs slightly fast. Some noises near the end of the song that sound like vinyl wear are actually on tape, as they exist in the same place on all copies that this fan has heard.

Hi blackeeik,

just gave my copy a listen - I can't tell if there are any other releases around with mono-versions as I never came accross one.

1) see the imprint on the label - I doubt a 1970-release with a Production-note from 1971

2) It is the LP-version of No.2 and I guess only released in stereo

3) sure, fake stereo

4) Stereo

5) I think so, sounds like yann described it above but haven't compared

Thanks Yann and silkcut,
I looked at the sources that yann posted and noticed that the B-side was'nt listed as a stereo source. That is why I wanted to ask someone that had the single.

Thanks for clearing it up! It's a shame ENSTL never got released on CD in stereo!
