Excuse my ignorance, but why would one want OBI's? Aren't these the papers that get folded on the outside of the CD in Japan?

I also never understood the OBI attraction, but it is included in the info in all auctions so it seems quite sought after.

An OBI makes the product complete. This is not interesting if you're looking "only" for the music but quite interesting if you're collecting stuff.

Besides from that the CDs/LPs often look beautiful with OBI. Like buying with my eyes, listening with my ears.

As silkcut1978 already explaines, an OBI doesn't make a CD interesting, as a collector it's just nice to have it all complete. It's the same as, if you have a 4 CD set in a box, than you would like to have the box as well.

One more dumb question: who adds the OBI strip? Is it done by the retailer? The manufacturer? or someone else? And why did they start adding them?

Glad that you like what I alreaqdy sent Andre - please be patient for part two as I'm not home anymore but you will find the next ones in your inbox soon.

blakeeik - it's done by the manufacturer but I can't tell you why they use obi-strips in Japan. What I can say is that they often include details which are not printed on the artwork, like the release month and year which is great information (at least for completists). Some countries have their own things going anyway - in the US every CD has these anoying sticky tapes with the artist/album informations on the top of the jewel-case. Great if you're looking from above into the rack but it always needs some time to remove them completely once you bought it.

Anyway, I'm glad that I'm able to help Andre out. I once bought Ronnie's (and Bo's) Live at the Ritz without OBI and it took me a decade or so before I finally got it. But that's the completists madness ;-)
