The best 1977-78 outtakes and demos collection?
Posted by: Handova ()
Date: July 28, 2009 16:02

I'm far from being an exhaustive collector, let alone a completist. But I happen to have some bootlegs from the 1977-78 period, being one of my favorite moments.

Song such as "Claudine", "So Young", "Do You Think I Really Care", and all the early versions from "Some Girls" and "Emotional Rescue" - you get the picture.

I own the original "Made In The Shade 1978" and "Gals Gags Pin Ups" bootlegs, also "Claudine" on tape (ripped from vinyl) and some other tunes I've downloaded through the years. But my question is...

What is (or are) the best collection(s) for these recordings?

I'd like to know if there's something a bit exhaustive, in the sense of putting all the known tapes from the period together. Also, most of what I've heard suffer from speed issues, a helluva hiss and blank spots here and there.

Is there any winner collection for the Some Girls sessions?

Thank you very much in advance.

"Girls, Pills & Powders" from Pignose compiles most of the available tracks from the SG sessions o, a 5 cd set.
Unfortunately not always the better sound and CDr release.

Never heard anything better than Girls Pills and Powders. Place Pigalle STE volumes are not better. The Pignose release offers better stereo for some tracks and mostly better sound than previous releases.
Mitch, by the way, the 5 discs set set has been released on printed Mitsui gold disc...even better than silver disc. And nobody care as everyone is into downloads.

I said that in case if Handova was in search of the original release.

"Accidents Will Happe"n from VGP is better.
"Paris Outtakes" from Vigotone is better.
"Place Pigalle" from VGP (released latter) is better, but mono.
etc...

Pignose only did homemade remastering from previous releases, not sure the sound was improved.

Where did you read that Mitsui was better than silver?
Btw, my CD player which is very sensible to CDr can hardly play the Pignose CDs.

Please use the whole line , not the part you like .

Most of the bootleg releases are limited to 500 copys , that's why everyone is into downloads !

A lot, for sure, but not everyone (fortunately).

Sound is improved for sure. I compared it before as I own every releases of Some Girls Sessions. They only did a homemade remastering ? How do you know ? you worked for them ?

About Mitsui gold disc, do some research....on Google. Sister Morphine is using it too.
I own every Pignose releases and my Cambridge Audio CD player got no problem playin' em all.

Mostly not. Everyone wants everything for free. Most of the people don't want to spend a penny on bootlegs.

Sister Morphines "Emotional Rescues Outs and Alt" (while not complete for the 77-78 era) are some of the best quality I've heard. You can get it at Urban Steels post.
As far as cdrs- I've NEVER had a problem with playing or failing with Mitsui brand thats used by SM ( I didnt know thats what Pignose used!) They are top of the line-running 3-5 dollars apiece for gold and thermal depending on where you order them.

If i have the chance ( and the money ) i buy every silver i can get , i have not that much , around 70 silvers .

Same for me :-)

Of course I would rather have silvers too!! (Hi- Jos!)
mitch, you're right -time will tell but I know this I have some SM original purchased cdr releases from 1998 that play perfect so maybe they will last as long as I do anyway!

Their names ? It was own by a person only. This does tell me how in fact you know the subject. Still think "he" did a homemade remastering ? lol

You think it is professionally remastered? LOL.
Btw, don't worry, I don't care about ML and his friend(s)'s little business...

I don't think...I'm sure. As sound engineer, I know the person who did it exclusively for this release.
If you don't care, then there's no need to answer...especially when you know too little on the subject.

Anyway Handova, you've got my opinions, you've got Mitch's opinions and UrbanSteel's opinions. The best thing to do if you are a "download" person, try them all and judge by yourself. Have a good listen ! :-)

The little I know is enough obviously.
Sorry to have criticized the work of your friend, but it didn't impressed me.

Btw, the Pignose release is the most complete release of those sessions and I advice it for that only reason.
You should be happy.

your freind ? I was a Pignose releases collector and a customer not a freind. The guy who did the remaster was not a freind either. Again, don't talk about things you don't know or should I say "Don't Judge a book by looking at the cover" ?
I don't need to be happy for that, we are all here to give Handova opinions.

The 35 77-78 cuts on VGP's 4-cd Place Pigalle beat the STE/OBR ("Paris Results" ) titles by a huge margin : better sound, lover-gen tapes, correct speed. A delight to listen to and I'm not a fan of late VGP releases smoking smiley
The old 1990 Vigotone CDs Paris Outtakes were **nice** too...

100 agree, at the exception maybe of the Better Results/PP vol.3 which sounds very good.
Only default of the PP from VGP imho: all mono.

I shall add the latest bunch of outtakes (dug out by OBR?) with Broken Toe and other cuts are particularly turgid and boring : it's mainly instrumental trax of band members struggling with a dodgy riff for 7 minutes.

The OBR titles, especially on vinyls are nice to collect...
What a surprise, when we were able to put a hand on it, before the internet existance...

I forgot Twilight Zone on VGP has a few very good 77-78 trax (with lots of hiss)

Mitch I didn't know about the mono. And I've been told DAC's "Time Trip" has the same problem : mono all the way. Really stupid imho. Maybe one day on another expensive relese?
