Anybody remember the first time they heard it? I recall singing it on the playground (4th grade). We sang Three Dog Night's Joy To The World too. But I don't remember EXACTLY when I heard it.
This suddenly made me remember seeing a review of the Stones' 1994 Wembley concert - I can't find the full text on line, but it began:
"Clap your hands. Mick Jagger commands Wembley, and seventy thousand people obey. It looks like one of those mass calisthenics demonstrations the Chinese used to go in for. Yeah yeah yeah WOO."
and it ended...
"You couldn't have wished for more. The Rolling Stones may not be dangerous now, they may no longer be a threat to decent civilised society, but they still know how to let it bleed. Yeah yeah yeah WOO!"
I'll have to see if I can find the rest of it - I remember it mostly because the identity of the Brown Sugar fan was (to me) so unexpected. Salman Rushdie.
The first time I heard Brown Sugar was at a freind's house when I was about ten. His older sister had rock 45s we would listen to and this was easily the best one. I couldn't get the "just around midnight" lyric out of my head. What a great song! Got Hot Rocks soon afterwards and I've been a Stones fan ever since. Brown Sugar has it all...great intro, rockin' beat, killer sax solo, and of course the sing along ending. It gets no better for me even after all these years.
BS was the first single I ever bought. In 9th grade back in spring 1971 our Spanish class from junior high in suburban Maryland took a field trip to see "Don Quixote" on film at a theater in Alexandria, VA. After the theater showing we were give some free time to walk about the nearby stores. I went into a record shop and bought the brand-new single. The love affair began right there.
Don't remember the first time I heard it. But at Seattle 1975 I heard the opening chords and didn't recognize it. All these people around me were jumping up and down and I'm thinking, "I know this song! But I can't remember what it is!" Then when Mick started singing I finally recognized.
