A Neil Young question....
Posted by: Sighunt ()

In addition to collecting Stones,Clapton,U2, Springsteen, etc on audio/video, I also like Neil Young but don't have anything concert-wise on DVD. For those who are into Neil, are there any recommendations for concerts/live material on DVD (either good quality boots or COMMERCIAL releases) worth acquiring?

LIVE RUST, don't think about anything else for starters.

Right, but the DVD is called Rust Never Sleeps. Live Rust is the soundtrack CD.

Eventually, Weld from the Crazy Horse tour during the 1991 Gulf War will be released on DVD. The Jonathan Demme film Heart of Gold from a few years ago isn't bad either.

Stay away from Neil Young in Berlin. No one needs to hear live Trans.

C'mon...Live in Berlin is Classic CHEESE! Where else can you see Niles Lofgren wearing a wireless headset and running around stage with his arms out pretending he is flying. Tour could have been sponsored by Chess King, from looking at their clothing.

It's actually not bad, if you take away the TRANS material.

Incredibly, Nils could be seen 10 years later doing a modified version of this SAME ridiculous airplane move in Neil Young Unplugged. I actually like the Berlin DVD, though it's a little disconcerting to watch Neil doing all his plaid flanne shirt music while looking like a skinny-tied new wave guy.

Year of the Horse by Jim Jarmusch you could check out.

It´s a documentary of the ´96 tour with full length tracks and old(er) material.

I second the recommendations of YEAR OF THE HORSE and HEART OF GOLD -- the former for loud, Crazy Horse antics and the latter for the more gorgeous side of Neil. RUST NEVER SLEEPS is classic but, as a film document, inferior to YOTH & HOG.

WELD is great too but not available on DVD (although I presume bootleg copies exist).

Live at Red Rocks is excellent

YIKES I forgot about that one -- you're right. And if you're in the minority that dug GREENDALE there's a nice document of a solo acoustic performance filmed prior to the album's release. It was a bonus DVD included w/first pressings of GREENDALE. (Trivia: Bill attended one of those acoustic shows.)

I ended up in the CSNY: Deja Vu movie for 2 seconds, Neil next to me on the street laughing it up. I was not aware of the scene until I watched the movie for the first time last week on Fios On Demand. I forgot that there was a camera crew shooting when I met him.

Thanks to all for the recommendations!
One of my favorite Neil CDs is the MTV Unplugged show from the early 1990's. I really like the tunes that were played. I know at one time it was released on VHS. I am assuming that this has never been officially released on DVD. Does anyone know if there is a good audio/video (DVD) boot of this show?

I'm sure it exists. Worth seeing, if only for the bizzare pump organ version of Like A Hurricane. If you're into Neil's "mellow" stuff, you might also try to hunt down a bootleg of his 1984 appearance on Austin City Limits. Lots of stuff from Harvest, Comes A Time, and his then-current album, Old Ways.

That Austin City Limits included at least a couple of songs he's never released: "Amber Jean" and "Let Your Fingers Do The Walking".

There was one show that I think was only available on laserdisk but the title escapes me -- it was from the Shocking Pinks era, very theatrical. Nutty show but entertaining. Anybody else remember that?

Found the title of the laserdisk: SOLOTRANS directed by Hal Ashby!

Found this torrent of SOLO TRANS :

Despite the title the only song from TRANS is "Mr. Soul". I believe this was the source for a couple of tunes that later were released on LUCKY THIRTEEN.

Description/review:

Solo Trans is a concert film by Neil Young, released in 1984. It was recorded at the Harrah Arena in Dayton, Ohio on September 18, 1983 during Young's Solo Trans tour. Originally released on only LaserDisc and VHS, the film has since gone out of print.

In the early 1980s, Neil Young released records that so baffled his folk-rock fanbase that his record label even sued him for producing "unrepresentative" music. This experimental phase of Young's career, which saw him delving into electronic music on the album "Trans" (1982) and following it up with the straight ahead rockabilly of "Everybody's Rockin'" (1983), is represented in the 1984 concert film "Solo Trans."

"Solo Trans" has several bits of concert footage all tied together with bizarre and often poorly produced newscast segments that appear to be parodying the entire medium of television, but are too much like real news and variety shows to pack any real satiric punch. Young strums some folk standbys in the beginning, unleashes his vocoder in the middle and closes the show with a short set of early rock and roll all while fake groupies and makeshift TV personalities invade the frame from time to time.

"Solo Trans" was directed by Hal Ashby, the giant of 1970s cinema that gave us "Harold and Maude" ('71), and "Being There" ('79). Sadly, this just shows that the 80s were often hard on those who had artistic success in the 70s. While Young survived his musical mid life crisis to become an elder statesman of rock, Ashby died of cancer in 1988 before he could experience any kind of Altman like comeback in the 1990s.

Tracklist:

"Heart of Gold"
"Old Man"
"Helpless"
"Ohio"
"Don't Be Denied"
"I Got a Problem"
"Mr. Soul"
"Payola Blues"
"Get Gone"
"Don't Take Your Love Away From Me"
"Do You Wanna Dance?"

I agree that Live Rust is very good. Also Unplugged is very good. On the live boot side there is the Perfect Echo disks 1 - 12. This is avalible thought the kindness of strangers at: [bbchron.blogspot.com]

LIVE RUST is an album; RUST NEVER SLEEPS is the title of the movie (and also an album -- hence the confusion perhaps?).
