Little Red Rooster 1977

I have loved this very bluesy version of Rooster since it was released. We used to love to sit around and just play this part of Love You Live over and over...today while listening to it taking my daughter to school, I heard FOR THE FIRST time that both Keith and Ron are playing slide on it. I imagine everyone here knew this already but it was like hearing it for the first time ever again for me. I knew KR dabbled in slide on Let It Bleed a bit and here and there, but this is really really good slide rhythm. Where else did these 2 both play slide at the same time, or where else did KR play slide so well? Did KR ever play slide live again?

Great tune.
Thanks for listening...

yeah, on the No Security tour: You Got the Silver
(he played slide on stage in 78 as well, but i suppose that's not what you mean by "ever again" )

Personally I always found the two slide guitars on this version a bit messy. I don't think anything can top the Brian-era live versions such as The Ed Sullivan Show & Paris '65 (not for me anyway), but I prefer the Knebworth '76 version to LYL '77.

I wasn't so keen on those versions from 1989-90 which were performed in a higher key ('C' instead of 'G')...

A version from the Mick Taylor era would've been interesting!

I also didn't care for the 89-90 version especially after being well in love with the 77 version by then. To bad MT never got a crack at it.

Keith used a slide on "Happy" from '72 through '78.

I agree this is a great version of Rooster(although I think nothing beats the Brian original)but all the old tunes on Mocambo are cool. LOVE Route 66 and Around and Around! Never have cared for the later live versions with Eric guesting. Nothing against Slowhand but it just seems Rooster comes across better with a little more restraint on the lead guitar IMHO.

Outstanding!
Thank you for that!
Where was that?

with sssoul:
When did he play slide in 1978 on stage?
Was it him on Love in Vain? I thought that was Ron
Do you mean the woodstock stuff?

Thanks

I remember the first time I spun Love You Live. My second Stones album, and when I hit side three I was awe struck. I had never heard something so thrilling, raw and smokey. The sinewy guitar lines that skulk through Little Red Rooster are prime evil. Keith snakes in and out of the mix with his slide, and Ronnie's leads strut like a cock in the barnyard. Stunning stuff, and inspirational. Sent a young teen hunting through the history of American Blues to find the source.

on what number, you mean? Happy (as someone's already noted).
if you mean what shows: judging from the photos, it looks like most or all of them.

yes, and on You Gotta Move on the 69 tour too. but the question was about his onstage slide-playing after 77.

And please not the orange MXR Phase 100 lying in front of the drums.

Btw: to be really anorak: it's the only tour Keith used a brass slide, just as Wood favours.

going back to the main subject of the thread... Little Red Rooster on LYL is the bluesiest of all blues songs Stones played through the years.

It is outstanding blues.
I guess my very favorite Stones blues is the Still A Fool outtake. THAT IS AMAZING to listen to.

Keith used a slide on "Happy" from '72 through '78.

Mick Taylor played lead on Happy live.

I could have sworn that Keith and Ronnie exchanged leads on slide during Let It Bleed when I saw the first show of the two they played in Boulder 81. Anyone else there that remembers?

Side 3 of Love you Live is great - I am in the minority here but I can't take Mick's vocals on the rest of this record.

It doesn't come close to the Stones' 1964 studio version.

This is the picture you see when you look up rock and roll guitarist in an encyclopedia. Thanks for posting this Ms Sssoul!

As to the original topic of the thread, the version of Little Red Rooster from the El Mocambo is my favorite. If the Stones ever do release something from their archives (I'm not holding my breath) then a complete El Mocambo would be at the top of my list.
