Keith was asked to rank 20 singers, and his ballot is included in the front of the magazine. Mick's name does not appear on Keith's ballot, but Keith ranked himself at No. 20!

Lighten up everyone, it's just someone's opinion. Since the list was from a vote of thier peers, it does provide some insight into where their heads were at. Once again though, it's just a handful of peoples opinion. No need to get upset.

Hilarious. He doesn't mention Mick. I wonder if Mick would pick Keith as one of his favourite guitarists. I'm sure he would.

And where is Roger Daltrey? A very powerful singer albeit with a limited range.

Not to debate all the people and positions, but that Keith voted himself
is just funny,if it´s true...

But I´m missing Chrissie Hynde for sure, couldn´t find her in the ranking,
and that´s a shame.

those lists are only made that people start arguing about....
this specific list is one of the worst listings i've ever seen....

considering topt ten:
where is
JAGGER, JOPLIN, BOWIE, OZZY, VEDDER, PLANT, CORNELL, WINEHOUSE, MERCURY, COHEN ???

those guys must all have been deaf....

The question is how do you define a "great singer".

If you say a great singer is one who sings very clean, perfect notes - let's call it opera-style - well, then of course singers like Elvis, Lennon or Dylan should not be in the top ten and Freddie Mercury would probably be in pole position there.

On the other hand (and that's the way I would define a good singer) you can rank them by the effect they achieve with their voice, meaning do they have a unique "trademark sound", can they get emotions across and so on.
In such a list singers like Lennon and Dylan deserve their ranking among the ten best singers because they have an ability to stir up emotions like few other singers can. They sound credible and original (e.g. the unique unmatched Blonde on Blonde sound). Looking at things this way, the list is not too bad in my opinion.

you'r e right in some points. it's not about technique (only).
but hey OZZY has such a unique voice. so does mercury (although i dont like him too much)and JOPLIN (i cant stand her) has a great and unique voice with lot of feeling).

See, now that's a list. Bad on me for omitting Aaron Neville.

You're seriously arguing that all of those singers are superior to Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Al Green?

I oppose to the cultural streamline-credo we see in this kinda list-contexts.

Where is Annisette Koppel, threefoldly better than Janis?

And we always havbe to remind ourselves & each other that there
always exists a subjective element.

Yeah - personally, I'd take Bob over Jimmy Cliff, but Toots I can understand.

I can't really imagine a top 10 list without Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin.
I suppose Elvis would be number one on my list.

I was thinking the same thing Gazza.

I just think its sad that Frank Sinatra, the man nicknamed "The Voice" isnt anywhere on that list. From the early 1950's (the Capital years) through the end of the 60s, Mr. Sinatra had by and far the best voice in music. I dont care for much of his early crooning, but when he was paired up with jazz styled arrangers like Nelson Riddle, Billy May,Neal Hefti, and Quincy Jones, Sinatra left all other singers in the dust.
Sinatra aside, where is Dean Martin, or Bing Crosby? Perhaps the people at Rolling Stone dont think anything before Rock and Roll counts as music. These exclusions are, in my opinion, unforgivable.

According to Rolling Stone magazine the top singers have been revealed. Well some, Mick is #16, Paul McCartney 11 and Aretha Franklin #1. Now doesn't that stink?
