Lennon - rock and roll great voice - please note the great Robin Zander of Cheap Trick sounding a lot like Lennon.

That's a BS list. John Lennon? Stevie Wonder? Mother of God. MIck is better than both of them by a mile; so's Al Green, Ann Peebles, Bob Marley, Scratch Perry, the Morrisons (Jim & Van), Pickett, Bowie, Sly, Strummer, Waylon - the list goes on and on and on and on. The bottom line is: any "top ten singers of the RnR era" list that doesn't include Al Green, is worthless.
My list (rock n roll era only) would be something like:
1 Sam Cooke
2 Aretha
3 Waylon Jennings
4 Al Green
5 Bob Marley
6 Elvis
7 Van Morrison
8 Otis
9 Mick
10 Jim Morrison
EDIT:
...and where's The Georgia Peach? The Beauty? Little Richard Penniman? C'mon!
No Muddy? No Wolf? No Gladys Knight? How in the Hell do Lennon and Stevie make the top ten? There are 3 singers in The Band that beat both of those guys.

Al Green, Bob Marley & Jim Morrison in the rock n roll era? To me the rock n roll era is circa 1955 to 1962.

You are more of a purist than I, Sleepy.
Just for you, my top ten from the SC-approved rock-n-roll era (55-62)
1 Sam Cooke
2 Elvis
3 Little Richard
4 Solomon BUrke
5 Muddy
6 Mavis Staples/Pops Staples (tie)
7 Smokey Robinson
8 Dion
9 Howlin' Wolf
10 Fats Domino

Well I think I'd have to include Jerry Lee Lewis & Gene Vincent in there somewhere, but I could live with those! : )

It was tough to leave The Killer off there - he was my last cut. I must admit, I didn't even think about Gene Vincent, though I certainly enjoy the man's work.

The Ghost of New Taste (indeed), I like your philosophy of remaking the list - but are all the names that were written over omitted forever - no hope of belonging to top 100 at all...
The best was putting Jimmy Reed into position #5 - now, that was a move!
