its actually not a bad list,
but:

-mick schoud be in top ten, far above paul mccartney.
-WHERE'S DAVID BOWIE

Keith Richards voted,
Id like to know in wich position he put mick! smiling smiley

Re: Aretha is named greatest singer

That's a BS list. John Lennon? Stevie Wonder? Mother of God. MIck is better than both of them by a mile; so's Al Green, Ann Peebles, Bob Marley, Scratch Perry, the Morrisons (Jim & Van), Pickett, Bowie, Sly, Strummer, Waylon - the list goes on and on and on and on. The bottom line is: any "top ten singers of the RnR era" list that doesn't include Al Green, is worthless.

My list (rock n roll era only) would be something like:
1 Sam Cooke
2 Aretha
3 Waylon Jennings
4 Al Green
5 Bob Marley
6 Elvis
7 Van Morrison
8 Otis
9 Mick
10 Jim Morrison

EDIT:
...and where's The Georgia Peach? The Beauty? Little Richard Penniman? C'mon!
No Muddy? No Wolf? No Gladys Knight? How in the Hell do Lennon and Stevie make the top ten? There are 3 singers in The Band that beat both of those guys.

Well, the BBC list is o.k. but the fact that Michael Jackson (aged 50) is the youngest artist listed in the "top 25" might tell you something.
I mean, is Keith (one of the voters it seems) well informed in all music periods.
Mind you, good to see John Lennon @ number 5 = Mr Soul, in my opinion.

I have no problem with Aretha at the top. Three white singers in the top ten, two in my opinion don't belong there. Lennon and Dylan. If this is on voice and singing alone.

As songwriters yes, but singers definitely not.

Lennon???

The point of leaving Dylan, Lennon or Jagger out of that kind of list is like leaving Keith Richards out of the 'best guitarists' list. Technically Keith is worse than most of the guitarists playing in your next joint.

In my list Dylan and Jagger are numbers one and two without reflection - what comes after them I need to really think about. Otis, Cooke, Marvin, Artha... aah, so many of them..

No problem with Aretha - but Dylan?!?!? Songwriter, fer sure, but singer, no way.

Lennon - rock and roll great voice - please note the great Robin Zander of Cheap Trick sounding a lot like Lennon.

.

I can see your point about Dylan, but I think one can not the seperate the voice from his tunes... and even if you can: I still remember the impression of listening (in fact: watching) "We Are The World", and only one thing that really made the impression, and really stuck out was the voice of Dylan - and at the time I was not any fan of his at all. It was the voice and nothing but the voice. If a voice like that doesn't count in a list of "greatest singers" than those kind of lists are next to nothing. Like I said with the same logic Keith Richards would not make any 'greatest guitarists' list. And that's against any common sense. Being a master of a certain instrument is not barely the technical ability.

Again, from SIMON NAPIER-BELL'S book, page 60 and 61, respectively.

"The Stones' music was the hypnotic beat of rhythm and blues, mainly Jagger's, the words were slurred and southern, the words never easily understood. Mick offered an explanation. "I remember when I was very young, I read an article by Fats Domino which influenced me. He said, "You should never sing the lyrics out clearly".

John Lennon once said, 'You don't have to understand what Bob Dylan's saying, you just have to hear the way he says it. '

Keith was in the jury. That explains why Bowie's not on the list... And it also explains why Aretha's up there. He simply loves her!

3 Little Richard
4 Solomon BUrke
5 Muddy
6 Mavis Staples/Pops Staples (tie)
7 Smokey Robinson
8 Dion
9 Howlin' Wolf
10 Fats Domino

Although perhaps not a "great" singer, Gene Vincent (like The Killer) was a vocal stylist that didn't sound like anyone else before him.

The Ghost of New Taste (indeed), I like your philosophy of remaking the list - but are all the names that were written over omitted forever - no hope of belonging to top 100 at all...

The best was putting Jimmy Reed into position #5 - now, that was a move!

Thanks, Doxa - glad you enjoyed. I didn't have the time to re-order all of them, but yeah, for me, none of the cross-outs belong in the top 100 (though some may be in my next 10 or so).

I'm with you, Jimmy Reed was a bad bad man - I could listen to nothing but Jimmy Reed all day and night, and be quite happy.

Possibly the greatest singer of all time is P.J. Proby (& he's still amazing at 70!). Certainly one of the most versatile, in the early days he could sound like James Brown one moment, Johnny Cash the next & Gene Pitney the next! He also cut my favourite ever version of The Beach Boys' 'Don't Worry Baby'...scroll forward to 2.30:

Mick is a great singer for the Stones....but when compared to Lennon and Wonder, they are way ahead. First Lennon has far more vocal range than Jagger and was an incredible singer. Wonder as well. Very high range in his vocals.
