YES WE CAN

President Obama in Crow Agency, Montana, spring 2008, Apsaalooke (Crow) Nation

What did you listen to growing up?

I have pretty eclectic tastes. I grew up in the Seventies, so a lot of Seventies rhythm & blues and pop were staples for me: Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, Elton John, Rolling Stones.

Is there anyone who you would say were musical heroes to you at the time?

If I had one, it would have to be Stevie Wonder. When I was just at that point where you start getting involved in music, Stevie had that run with Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Innervisions, and then Songs in the Key of Life.

Those are as brilliant a set of five albums as we've ever seen. So that was a guy I loved, and I loved the Stones.

A big congratulations to Barack Obama and the USA. This is what I had hoped for.
I think Terry said it best: It's only Obama but we like him.

What a great day to be alive.

A very capable man and a very moving, solemn speech tonight.
He's got the weight of the world on his shoulders now; you could see that on his face as well tonight...
...i think he's up to it. i think he takes the responsibility very seriously. I don't believe he comes to us "bought" as do most politicians. I believe he cares about human value and is intellectually curious and capable enough to move things forward in a sane and humane way, tho the road will be very very tough. McCain's concession speech was very gracious and generous-hearted.
We've been thru a bunch of real gangsters and held hostage for 8 years.
If people stay connected to their personal politics (yes we can) as they do in other countries, we perhaps won't be taken over by another gang of ultra-elite psycho-thugs. stop it in it's tracks. allowing the coup of 2000 and the upcoming united states of halliburton should have been stopped in the streets if congress was too wussy to do it.

... michelle is so beautiful...they way she glides across the stage with that big smile and fab outfits...someone should make a video collage using an ace version of HTW for the soundtrack. oh yes.

perhaps after a period of correction, we can finally start the twenty-first century, and evolve enough as a species to challenge the greed and misery of gangsterism and protectionism and replace it with sensible policies.
i'm not the unicorn type and i'm not sure what Obama will or won't be able to accomplish, but I'm really on his side and I feel, in many areas, he's on mine.

Have just heard the news.

This a major change for America and I just hope Obama is up to the task. He promises a lot and now and now he has to deliver.

I just wish we could have someone like him here in Great Britain, rather than the dour, useless fat Scotsman, Gordon Brown.

For people outside the US, or for anyone who cares to know...

In the US Presidential election, each of the fifty states casts a specific number of "electoral votes." The number of electoral votes cast by each state is in proportion to that state's population in relation to other states. So a very populous state, like Florida or California has many more electoral votes than a state with fewer people... like Rhode Island or Montana.

When the electoral votes from all 50 states are added up, the first candidate to reach a total of 270 electoral votes from any combination of states' votes is the winner.

I am pleased to type...

President Barack Obama

We're very happy here in Boston too! First time that everything I voted for was passed which is a nice change.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lowly of birth
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Say a prayer for the common foot soldier
Spare a thought for his back breaking work
Say a prayer for his wife and his children
Who burn the fires and who still till the earth
And when I search a faceless crowd
A swirling mass of gray and
Black and white
They don't look real to me
In fact, they look so strange
Raise your glass to the hard working people
Let's drink to the uncounted heads
Let's think of the wavering millions
Who need leading but get gamblers instead
Spare a thought for the stay-at-home voter
Empty eyes gaze at strange beauty shows
And a parade of the gray suited grafters
A choice of cancer or polio
And when I look in the faceless crowd
A swirling mass of grays and
Black and white
They don't look real to me
Or don't they look so strange
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's think of the lowly of birth
Spare a thought for the rag taggy people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Let's drink to the two thousand million
Let's think of the humble of birth

Well, before he does, all possible good wishes to our US friends and their new President - whether you voted for him or not, here's hoping he'll be a good thing for the US and the world.

HISTORIC! INCREDIBLE! MY VOTE COUNTED. I waited for one hour at the US Embassy in Jakarta Indonesia, not far from where Obama went to Primary School!!!!

A long grey winter is finally coming to an end. "Here comes the sun..."
