It's stupid to cover that song.

It's impossible indeed....just like "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan....why even try?

yeah, impossible to cover. the laibach version is weird, but at least they tried to make something different out of the song.

I liked Natalie Merchant's cover, released as a b-side, I think... Nothing special about it, but I liked it better than any other I'd heard before.

The problem with bands trying to cover that song is they emphasize the guitar waaay too much. The beauty of Sympathy is in its rhythm, which in the studio version is all about the percussion and the piano, and the very SPARSE lead guit. licks. Even in the Ya-Ya's version, the rhythm guitar is not overblown-- it's just there in the background. The bass, drums and lead licks run that groove. Both of those versions are all about the space between the notes (as cliche as that is!). Gn'R, even Jane's A., and others play it like most lame classic rock cover bands, with that brilliant rhythm replaced by a much whiter, more watered down, more straight ahead rock type rhythm. The J.A. version is acoustic and is nice, but the rhythm is still not nearly as nice, kind of a hybrid, low-fat, low sugar, low sodium version of the real thing.

Guns and Roses version is one of the worst I've ever heard!
But then again, I always thought they were pretty crummy anyway.

Certian Songs shouldn't be covered, I agree that this is one of them.
Another one is the temptation's "My Girl".

Bryan Ferry's version is actually pretty good.

I liked the Stones cover of Like A Rolling Stone. I like how the Stones cover songs - they do them fantastically.

But when people cover the Stones for recordings? It's always a nightmare. They should be kept to just doing live only, not recordings. They're terrible to cover for recordings I think.

Jane's Addiction, hands down.
Listen to it instead of being snobbish.
It gives drama to the song, momentum and it sounds cool.

Oh yes - you are right about Bryan Ferry's version being OK; but he sounds a bit ironic; as if he's joking about it - which is the best approach to that song. Almost the same way as when he covered A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall...it's half joke/half serious - and the result is terrific

That Guns n Roses cover is maybe one of the worst covers I have ever heard of any song. I always liked Jane's Addiction's cover cause they play it in such a different style.

GUNS'N ROSES is almost better than the original. I love it really, really much.

The only thing worse is their cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" -- OY VEY!

I don't know about all that Erik. I know you take your Dylan pretty seriously. But I liked the Stones cover of LARS and I liked Ferry's version The Times They Are A Changing...I mean, hey. Their is only so many songs that can be written. Yes it's very rare to improve on the original. But still kind of fun to hear a decent cover now and then.
