Few'of'em: Stones, Soundtrack Of Our Lives,
Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana,
Broder Daniel, Bob Hund, Pixies, Breeders,
Hothouse Flowers, Dubliners, Pogues.
And a couple of local bands called Magic Broom [www.blinkx.com] (video) &
Shades Of Orange. [www.badongo.com]

Most important for me emphasized.

A 90's band, either formed in the 90's or in the height of their career in the 90's. IMO The Stones wouldn't qualify. The 90's was the decade I was most furthest detached from new music. That being said, my answer would be:

Green Day
Pearl Jam
Page/Plant (Well, there were a 90's band, right?)

Pearl Jam, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, the Black Crowes, Mother Love Bone, Mad Season, PJ Harvey (solo artists too?), Alanis Morissette, Gov't Mule.

PJ of course & Nick Cave (does he qualify?).

oh yeah, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
90s were also pretty interesting for Bob Dylan!

Didn't they have one of the highest grossing tours of the 90s, far bigger than they did in the 60s/70s/80s???

I'd call that "the height of their career"...

Not in Real dollars. even so, their music is not 90's music then I guess we can call the Police a 2008 band, lets get real here.

In no particular order:

Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains
Breeders
Stone Temple Pilots
Smashing Pumpkins
Rage Against the Machine
Presidents of the United States of America
Tool
Spin Doctors
Soundgarden (o.k. so they are late 80's)
Sublime (o.k. so they are late 80’s too)
Primus (o.k. they are 80’s as well…)

Of course, none of these bands can even compare to the Rolling Stones!

Of all 90s bands, nobody beats Nirvana. Oasis made some good tunes back in the day (Don't Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova), but Blur is more interesting. Britney Spears was kind of special in the beginning. Those first singles were great IMO (Baby, One More Time etc.). Alanis Morisette and Sheryl Crow should get a mention too. Same with that Jarvis Cocker band (Pulp?). Common People is great.
The nineties was a great decade for music. I've never been one for electric music, but listen to some of that electric nineties music they used in Trainspotting and it's incredible (Especially the ong playing in the ending sequence of the movie - It's kind of dreamy electronica). It's called Born Slippy by a band called Underworld. The beginning of the song is what makes it great. Don't care too much for the rest, but that beginning just REEKS nineties for me. Just like Smells Like Teen Spirit. It was the decade I was a teenager in, and that's always very special. If I couldn't have the 60s or the 70s for my teen years, I'm perfectly happy with the nineties. Much rather that than the 80s or the 00s. I feel sad for those kids.

----------------------------------------------
Some good music from a great decade:

Born Slippy by Underworld:

Inner Smile by Texas:

All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Crow:

Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins:

Hand In My Pocket by Alanis Morisette:

Baby One More Time by Britney Spears:

Waterline by Dizzy Mizz Lizzy (Danish band that was very big back then):

Another Dizzy song. Their best IMO. It's called Silverflame:

Another Danish band. D.A.D.'s song Bad Craziness (Note the reworked Day Tripper riff):

But even though all this is good, there's nothing that beats THIS from the nineties. Nothing at all. Period:

GUIDED BY VOICES! Propeller, Bee Thousand, and Alien Lanes rule in their lo-fi glory.

Robert Pollard is still going strong. Saw his set at the Black Cat in DC Saturday. 2 1/2 hours with an almost completely new repertoire.

Always liked Alanis and this song. I have a great live version of this...can't remember where it came from, but this is the first time I've seen the video.

for me the list from most of you guys is way too long, there are only very few.
i think a new good rock band really is a rarity. even more so today.
they say punk´s not dead, but it is. same with rock if you ask me.
