It was said that as recently as a couple years ago, he still wanted to make another film with Robert Redford, but that they never found a script they thought was good enough. You have to admire that kind of thinking. If it's not going to be as good or better than what you've already done, and you don't need the money, don't do it.
Tell you what.......I saw this breaking news on IORR, BEFORE CNN and FOX NEWS put it on the air.
Another example of how Stones fans are connected with the world.
It's getting to the point where I check this website for news before I switch on the major news outlets.
I can see it now.....
"Did you hear the news about the earthquake in China?"
"No, I didn't.....let me pull up iorr.org, and I'll see....."
RIP, Paul Newman, and classic in every way. My favorite line of his was when they asked him why he never strayed from his wife of many years, and he said:
"I have steak at home.....why would I go out for hamburger?"
My favorite lines about one of his characters from a movie? George Kennedy:
"Smilin' that old Luke smile." and "He grin like a baby, but he bite like a gator."
First film of his I saw was The Sting (still a favourite), followed by Butch Casidy & The Sundance Kid. (Classic closing line: "For a moment there I thought we were in trouble".)
Best performance he gave, I think, was The Verdict.
A truly great actor. Saw Absence of Malice again recently. Newman was great orchestrating the comeupence of those who tried to squeeze him into a snitch, or grass.
Sad to hear. One of my late mother's all time favorite actors and consequently, one of mine as well, ever since I saw Butch Cassdiy & The Sundance Kid. I'm not a huge movie buff, but I did make a point of trying to see most of Paul Newman's movies. He had a charisma and charm that was just infectious. One of the great actors of our time.
Reading about him today, he had said he's always been a character actor...this despite his looks. He played against type. In 2007 he decided he couldn't act anymore because his memory was going, and his focus.
Excellent actor, great guy. I wish I could have seen him live, as the Stage Manager in Our Town on Broadway in 2002.
