My favorite song on Steel Wheels. Not just a latter day classic, but stands up to all the Stones eras.

I like most of the ballads the Stones do. This was the only true ballad recorded by them in the 1980s and it's killer. They did some nice ones in the 1990s - Out Of Tears, Blinded By Rainbows (not sure if that is one but it seems like one) and Already Over Me. Keith has always had killer ballads. The other on Bridges is just by the numbers...what is it called? I can't even remember. They had one good one on ABB - Laugh, I Nearly Died. Best ballad they've done in eons.

Then you take the stinkers like Angie and Fool To Cry and Streets Of Love...garbage.

What would be considered their best? I'm guessing Wild Horses followed by Beast Of Burden. I'd put Laugh...and Almost Hear You Sigh as 3 and 4, and then the rest from Tattoo You.

This is probably the most emotional song to me. I heard it one evening right before the news came up on the radio. I thought about the words "I can almost hear you sigh" and thought about my father who was very ill then. A few minutes later my sister called and told me he died, I asked her about the time - the rest you can guess

Goddamn. Not what I had in mind but hey, songs do tend to take on different meanings no matter how they were meant.

Probably the best stones track since exile, along w/shattered, saint of me, and YGMR. Good post.

<Neither is No Use In Crying and Worried About You...!>

But those songs were recorded in the seventies, I think.

One of my all-time favorites! Probably in the top 5, and I'd most likely wet myself if they ever played it live!!

Too young to see them live back then! LMFAO I mean on a more recent tour or the next one!!

It's a great song for sure.

it would be interesting to hear a more "gospel" version of this cut. I think it does have an almost spiritual vibe, and I've had somewhat the same feeling from it as JJHMick describes. A few lyric changes would be all that's necessary.

the O'Jays covered Dylan's "Emotionally Yours" in "gospel" and "R&B," i.e., slo-jam, styles. Something like that would have been intriguing for this tune.

Any comments, input or alterations on the recording dates/places, musicians and lyrisc?

This is the single one Rolling Stones song that I would cover if I was a singer.

i don't think it ranks with their best-ever work, but it's a rare case of a song befitting of a band that has matured.....unlike say, a ONNYA, or something of that ilk....

On the boot Seventh Of July they have a pretty damn good performance of this song. From that and that alone (it's the only Steel Wheels boot I have) it sounds fantastic and makes Ruby Tuesday and Angie sound even worse than they already are.

ah come on now, Skipstone, Ruby Tuesday is an absolute CLASSIC song.

Yeah I know it is but their performance of it in 1989-90 was rather...slick. That's all I'm getting at. It was too produced.

Not much to add, except to say I love this "Cousin of Beast Of Burden" - all versions. Keith's demos with the Winos show a nice progression to the finished track.

A nice ballad, some sexy lyrics about French kissing, but not among their finest work, IMO.

Almost Hear You Sigh: Probably one of the most completed tracks on Steel Wheels and surely one of the best Stones ballads in the last 20 years. Always loved that track and it's a pity they didn't play it since 1990.

i agree. they need to bust this tune back out

Wow, I think it's highly over-rated on this board. To me, the Stones have far superior ballads --

- Already Over Me
- Out of Tears
- and I even prefer Blinded By Love (from the same album as Almost Hear You Sigh)

And if I count songs from 70s I could find at least 5 others better than this:

- Wild Horses
- Angie
- Coming Down Again
- Memory Motel
- Till the Next Goodbye
(but not Fool To Cry, the lyrics are a bit too corny on that one)

And 60s, well start w/ No Expectations! (Can't think of others of top of my head).

Almost Hear You Sigh, to me, doesn't come close to any of the above tracks.

This will always be a nice song, though I wish it had a dryer, more natural production on it like Keith's "Make No Mistake". But that was the Steel Wheels album for you, so polished and shiny it makes ABB sound like Exile.

It reminds me of an early Stones song. I can imagine it being recorded at the same time as Heart of Stone or Play With Fire.

The last four songs on Steel Wheels are very good.

Simple tune like Beast of Burden. One of my fav Stones songs. Interweaving guitar work, great acoustic solo from KR. Also I like the live versions from the Urban Jungle Tour. The weaving guitar work is more prominent there. Hope they will play it on their next tour again.

A true gem. Dream of listen to it live in a huge stadium. That'll be an unique experience.
