my understanding is that double A-sides are quite often designated as such by the record companies -
in advance, i mean, not just "retrospectively" as people are suggesting.

In the case of the Beatles, yes, I think that's true. With a single like Come Together/Something, they certainly must have known they were releasing TWO songs that would each have been a huge hit if they were released on two separate discs, but it was good business to put two GREAT songs on one disc for 79 cents, or whatever singles cost in those days. But in the case of the Stones, I think it was probably more the case that they just didn't KNOW which song to release as the A side, so they put a song they knew was good on each side, each one a POTENTIAL hit, and then let the radio stations and the public decide which song was the hit and which song was the B-side.

live & learn: for what it's worth, wikipedia states that issuing singles designated as double a-sides
was a Beatles Innovation: [en.wikipedia.org] - isn't that interesting

(edited for clarity ... thanks Gazza :E )

..if somewhat unlikely. Here's what it says about Elvis' Hound Dog/Dont Be Cruel single, released in 1956.

"Don't Be Cruel" was originally the A side of RCA single 47-6604, with "Hound Dog" on the B-side,[1] although both sides became chart-toppers, RCA reissuing the single in later decades as double A-side. The single was the first to top all three extant Billboard charts: pop, rhythm & blues, and country & western.

Gazza honey, that doesn't contradict what wikipedia says about the Beatles having the first single
with two a sides designated by the record company when they issued it - which is what i was talking about.
i'm very happy if Elvis preceded them in having a hit with both sides of a single.

Releasing Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields as a double 'A' side prevented the 'Beatles' from having a No1 single in the U.K..
In the mid 60's the sales of a double 'A' side single were halved and this allowed 'Engelbert Humperdink' to take No 1 spot with Please Release Me.
THe 'Stones' suffered the same fate in the U.K. when Lets Spend the Night Together/Ruby Tuesday sales were halved and only reached No3 chart position.

Is it only because the actual version on the record is shortened and therefore not the actual song that more people don't agree that the choice is

Honky Tonk Women
b/w
You Can't Always Get What You Want
?

Does anyone else remember that Ruby Tuesday was shortened also
when they played it on the radio... They chopped out a verse if I recall.

I am sorry, I must be stupid or something, but there is something I don't understand about the "double A-side" logic. If I go to buy a single, say, "Let's Spend The Night Together"/"Ruby Tuesday" (or other way round), how do the buying of the copy effect to the single's chart position? Which side will get the 'point' to be counted? I know that at least back in the 60's the radio play had (a lot) an impact on the chart success, but so did the actual sales of the singles, too. It can't be the case that both sides will have a point to be counted by selling one copy, or can it really be the case (two flies dead with one hit)?

Think I'm going Mad, for a song not found elsewhere( or a live cover). If YCAGWYW is considered a b-side, then how can it be beat?

"Sweet Black Angel", wh. was the b-side to Tumbling Dice. Why oh why don't they resurrect this song and play it live?
