1973 is best. Many recent versions are good but in a different way.

I'd go with that. The 'unreleased Decca album' is one of my favourite boots and GS (for me) is the highlight of it. The guitars are just fantastic.

I like the Altamont as the best live version. Its so dark and forboding. Studio still rules, in all its mono glory. Not that the 72-73 versions are bad, but I think they miss the mark of the song as it was written. Keith should always play the lead on it. Its HIS song-and in my opinion, the best he ever wrote...spot on for the day.

Sorry Relics - we agree on most things but...

Taylor takes those two versions (Philly-72 & Wembley-73) into another zone.

Again I was right in the middle of all that music, back then and watched this
unit of the Stones surge into the Number#1 spot LIVE...

No worries, mate, I do appreciate your opinion, and those later version ARE great. I, too, love those shows...just saying, I prefer the stripped down, ugly, raw 1969 versions and the studio, rather than the slick, Taylor lead versions. ALL SUPERB, but I gotta defer to 1969.

It demonstrates what a brilliant song it is when it can be arranged/performed in so many different ways, all fantastic in their own distinctive manner.

The version of "Gimme Shelter" that plays at the end of the movie by the same name is actually from Phoenix 1969.

i've always loved this version also. I remember seeing the G/S movie on TV when I was a teenager and didn't get to see it again for years. in the meantime, that version haunted me.

I first saw it a drive in, in about 1972. We were too young to drive so a friends dad drove us in, and picked us up after the movie. Great double feature. Rainbow Bridge and Shelter. We cassette taped them, too. Talk about LOW FIDELITY!

Yeah, that was a blast. Only a few people there, so we went out and turned on every speaker in the place....it was crankin'.

No, it´s definitely an edited version of the Altamont performance. The full, unedited version is available on the "A Shot Of Salvation" bootleg.

I was right in the middle of all that too and the Stones did surge into the the #1 spot LIVE.... and that was the year of 1969 (beginning and ending in London with the American Tour sandwiched in between). The Stones have never been better than 1969, listen to those LIVE clips (Satisfaction, JJF, Carol, Stray Cat Blues) in London 2 weeks after Altamont and NOTHING can beat that. They were very good in 72/73 but already becoming parodies of themselves. 1969 was raw, real, and had an edge of danger and uncertainty - never was going to happen again and it didn't.....

THE BEGINNING OF A PERFECT YEAR OF STONES MUSIC (Mercy Mercy Live 1969) -

THE END OF A PERFECT YEAR OF STONES MUSIC (Satisfaction/JJF Live 12/21/69) -

Oh really? Thanks - I'll have to check it out! I have some great memories going to the drive in with my parents, going in your pjs, sitting on top of the roof of the station wagon with your pillows. And then an entirely different kind of memory going there as a teenage...... hehehe those were the days!
