Best Mick Jagger instrument performance (not counting vocals)?

Mr.J's been playing harp for probably close to 50 years, guitar, not sure but I first realized he could keep decent time on "Sway" and that's been 37/38 years. He's put in time on piano over the years. What's his best performance?

I'm partial to the harp on Midnight Rambler.

I've always loved his harmonica work on the Voodoo Lounge album, like say, the solo in "Moon Is Up". He's a great harmonica player. I'd love to hear him incorporate that side of his music into his pop tunes a little more.

Midnight Rambler harmonica by far! The guitar work in the album "Some Girls" is remarkable, too!

I would add harp on "Stop Breaking Down" on EXILE.
Guitar intro on "High Wire."
Electric piano on "Worried About You."

Would have to say either Worried Bout You or Back Of My Hand

Intro riff on Sad,Sad,Sad is also worth noting. Like Highwire, it sounds like a Keef-riff, but ain't. Wasn't it Jagger who made the Brown Sugar-riff too? I know it isn't him playing on record, but I think I've read somewhere that he created it...

So did I. Supposedly it was during the time he was filming Ned Kelly in Australia.

yeah, we know Mick wrote Brown Sugar in Australia; does the opening riff count as composition or arrangement?
i don't know; i don't think he's ever said specifically that he came up with the riff.
he may well have, though, why not - he's got a good teacher :E

but to get back to the topic at hand ... i don't do "bests" and "favourites"
but i want to mention his great gift for percussion. so i will :E

I think of the harp on 'Gimme Shelter" as being one of his 'signature' instrumental performances, for me at least

>> yeah - even boozed up, the maracas on Pretty Thing by David John & The Mood <<

and speaking of Brown Sugar, the whatever-it-is on that track - the washboard-sounding bit - that's quite masterful.
(i *really* feel he's got a great huge gift for using his voice as a rhythm instrument - but that's out of bounds for this thread!)

I remember my brother saying how much he loved the 'Keith Rhythm Sound' on Sway, to prove a point to me about why Keith is cooler than Mick.

Boy, did I have a good laugh at that one!!!

The riffs only count as arrangements. You can have a song written totally on an acoustic instrument with basic chords and some other bloke can completely transform it to a dance-track, it still the one who came up with the melody that is credited as songwriter.
Now, Keith and Mick have a special agreement...

I'd read that Brown Sugar is Mick's song completely.
Just as surprisingly, Beast of Burden is Keith's song!!
