Winning Ugly VXII1) The Playstation 3 consumes way too much electricity when playing Blu-Ray discs. It uses roughly five times the watts used by the average "stand-alone" Blu-Ray player.Quote

I don't mean to nitpick - but if you can afford to buy a BluRay player (of whatever kind) and afford to pay around fifty bucks for a BluRay disc, then the cost of *playing* the wretched thing is relatively small potatoes, right?

Blu-Ray discs that I've seen in the U.S. cost between $22.99 and $35.99.The prices will only get lower over time.I haven't seen any for $50 unless you're talking a multiple disc set. Also, you can rent the Blu-Ray discs at Blockbuster (I'm sure other places as well) for a premium of less than a dollar more than a regular DVD.
The only reason that I see to pick a player that costs over five times as much to run is the fact that it is also a gaming system. There are no other real advantages of the gaming system versus the top notch stand-alones (the disc load times are now almost the same). If you're only going to buy one Blu-Ray player,I guess you have to ask yourself if you want or do not want a gaming system.
I never said the PS 3 was bad. It's great.I was just pointing out that it does have some drawbacks to consider if you are planning on using it as your primary Blu-Ray player.
you dont need 1.3 with a ps3, the ps3 doesnt bitstream, it decodes truehd and dtshd-ma internally.Quote

You also need to have an HDMI version 1.3 equipped a/v receiver (and an HDMI 1.3 certified cable) to get the high resolution uncompressed sound (Dolby True HD and DTS HD-Master Audio) found on most new Blu-Ray titles as the PS 3 has no analog multi-channel audio outputs.

Mr.D
I have a copy of the regular(not Blu-Ray) version of SAL and the picture/sound quality on my home theater is FANTASTIC! I've ordered the Blu-Ray as well since I have a player...the resolution and 7.1 sound WILL be better but not tremendously I don't think...I'll let you know on the 29th though!
