They regularly re-run them doing Let's Spend The Night Together. I think they also performed Honky Tonk Woman on TOTP as well.

Only 6 (I think) of the TOTP perfomances havent been destroyed. An absolute scandal.

Thats why the BBC show the same clips all the time. They wiped most of the performances for storage space some time ago. Even the band's appearance on the first ever show (1.1.64) was wiped.

And the versions of LSTNT, HTW and BS that get shown are from the Christmas Day specials - not from the original broadcasts (at least the version of HTW for the Xmas show in '69 was recorded especially for the show - on 12.12.69, same day as that great clip of Gimme Shelter for 'Pop Go the 60s' (31.12.69)). The versions of LSTNT and BS are just reruns from the original performances earlier in the year when the songs came out.

I think Not fade away, Last Time (with George Best in shot dancing awkwardly in the studio audience) and GOOMC are the other three that survive.

Thats a promo video. Plenty of those have been shown. The last time the Stones appeared on TOTP was April 1971.

Jagger, however, performed in 1987, lip synching to Lets Work (so embarrassing, I watched it from behind the settee) and Bill was also in the studios for Je suis un rock star in 1981.

Can you imagine someone coming up with the performances of Wild Horses, Bitch, Mother's Little Helper, 2000 Light Years From Home, Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Spider And The Fly, I Can't Be Satisfied, If You Need Me, Cry To Me and Ruby Tuesday. Too tragic to even think about.

Well most of it was playback except for the 69-71 performances where Jagger provided live vocals over a prerecorde backing track.

Miming was banned from summer 1966, after which they used backing tracks - there was an interim period of a few weeks when the acts did perform live.

Interesting piece here

[en.wikipedia.org]

of the first 500 episodes from 1964-73, only 20 remain in the archives.

The Boxing Day 1967 episode which is mentioned as the earliest complete episode still in the archives would be the one which featured the reun of Lets Spend The Night Together

The Faces' performance in April 1971 where they perform two songs from their new album is still available, though. UK Gold reran it in 1994. Unfortunately the Stones' 2-song appearance in the short-lived "album slot" segment from the previous week (22.4.71) isn't, although the audio of it has survived.

I'm really interested in those album segment slots on TOTP. Where can I get info on them?

I remember them as a kid. I saw Peter Green doing something from The Game album and there was also a slot by The Strawbs doing The Hangman and The Papist.

UK Gold aired some great TOTP stuff back in 94 which I taped on video and am converting now coverting to DVD. They showed lots of punk era stuff like The Jam, Elvis Costello, The Stranglers, Nick Lowe, XTC, Gen X etc.

TotPs 2 is sort of nostalgic best of shown on BBC2, they show random old clips which can be great fun. they also do odd specials, Bruce, Roxy etc. I;m sure that they've done a Stones on. TotPs 2 is shown daily on cable channel DAVE. and each show is repeated thy the day. so keep an eye out.

The band may be playing to a backing track but Jagger is at his FINEST, LIVEST, BESTEST?

His performance has never been equaled on TOTP by ANYONE.

They rocked the show like no one ever has ........

THE greatest performance on Top of the pops ever IMHO

What a drag it is gettin' old

The following refers to how the BBC worked at the time.

In the 1960s and (early) 1970s TV shows, if recorded at all, were recorded onto big reels of magnetic tape. This is of course before domestic VHS/Betamax. These reels of tape were very expensive things. Very expensive.

Programmes, if retained at all, were only retained for a short time before the recordings were overwritten.

Who, in 1962/3/4 could possibly have predicted the interest 50+ years later in a seemingly transient teeny pop music show for example. No-one.

Hindsight is wonderful.

Don't judge the workings of the BBC tape library in 1963 by the standards of 2014 where just about everyone carries round a device capable of better recordings than anyone could manage in 1963.

It happened. It's a <expletive deleted> shame. But we have to move on.

For completeness, occasionally programmess pop up that were recorded using filming off screen. As far as I know, that wasn't routinely done by the BBC. A recent example is that some shows that were the precursor to Monty Python were found in the archives of the late Sir David Frost. Apparently they were filmed off-screen.

I do know that anyone who actually has a copy of something that (eg) the BBC does not have - having recorded it "illegally" - will be greeted warmly and with praise and in no way persecuted for having sinned!

Oh well I'm giving this thread a bump back to the front... in the forlorn hope that someone might have better copies of these tracks but I suppose the 'From The Vaults' bootleg might contain the best available.

Bitch and Wild Horses was recorded the same day, but was broadcast in April 17, 1971. Bitch was such a great performance from Mick, but Wild Horses he repeated the same line twice...
