A local radio station does this thing everyday called 10@10. "10 great songs from one great year". But today they had a slight twist. They did a tribute to Bo Diddley and played 10 songs with the "Bo Diddley beat":

06/06/2008 - FRIDAY! Today it's..."The Beat"....(Bo Diddley)!!

1. Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
2. Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy
3. Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away
4. David Bowie - Panic in Detroit (BEST OF SET!!)
5. Eric Clapton - Willie & the Hand Jive
6. George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Who Do You Love
7. Bruce Springsteen - She's the One
8. George Michael - Faith
9. Pretenders - Cuban Slide
10. U2 - Desire

BONUS TRACK: Beck - Black Tamborine

Any other songs you can thing of with The Beat?

I've often heard that seemingly simple beat is among the most difficult for a drummer to master. Kudos to Charlie!

I can't believe they put in crap like George Michael and left out stuff like the Who's "Magic Bus".

Well that's what this thread is for. The dj mentioned Magic Bus afterwards. He was going for a broad range of songs to prove the point of how Bo Diddley's music influenced people. Yeah I thought George Michael was a stretch. But their may have been other factor's behind him playing that one.eye rolling smiley

I always thought Dr. Robert by the Beatles has a kind of understated Bo Diddley beat, but I may be wrong. I dont listen to it too often cause it kinda sucks as a song.

Just stick to 'our' band.

Even though Keith mastered the rhythmn of "Not Fade Away", Brian was supposed to be the 'bo diddley beat'- specialist of the band (agreed by Bo and Keef). I think those are wonderful testimonies of that:

"Mona"
"Please Go Home"

Are there any others?

P.S. Huh, I just discovered Rockman's songs... but "Road Runner" and "Crackin Up" are not really using the 'beat', are they?

Is it true that the early crowd-pleaser "I'm Alright" is a Bo Diddley number, even though it is credited to Nanker-Phelge? At least, that is the way Charlie (!)introduces the number at NME Poll Winners concert. (The song doesn't have the famous 'beat', either...)

While the "shave and a haircut" beat is the BIG one assocoated with Bo,theres still a few more that are closely tied to him(even though some others nay have used them too) like Roadrunner,Diddley Daddy,I'm Alright, Before You Accuse Me,I'm A Man and Crackin up. Crackin up was emulated on the 60s hit "Love Is Strange" so much so that Bo is given partial songwriting credit. Heres one for ya. Which came first? Bo's "I'm A Man" or Muddy's "Mannish Boy"? Both cut at Chess and I think both received credit on each song(?)!

Yeah Rockman Forgot even the big E got in on the act! How about the Yardbirds doing "Here 'Tis"? Also "I'm A Man" on their Having a Rave Up! album credits D. Pomus& M. Shuman as composers. How many people claimed this song?

just noticed that "LOVE YOU LIVE" has Mannish Boy credited to London-McDaniel-Morganfield. I know Diddley and Waters names but who is London?

Bo was a God among men back in the day.

I always think that, for the Stones: they got their name from Muddy, riffs from Chuck Berry, but their vibe came from Bo. For the pure smokey voodoo guitar vibe - it is an easy straight line across 15 years from the original Who Do You Love to Gimme Shelter (and numerous other milestones along the way).

>> who is London? <<

nzentgraf.de identifies that as Mel London - here's what wikipedia has to say about him: [en.wikipedia.org]
not sure how accurate that is, but i hope it's better than nothing!
