Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. His debut is quite good too.

Not going to mention Cream, Bluesbreakers etc, as I thought this thread was just about his solo LP's? Maybe I Shouldn't include Derick and the Dominos then!

Sticking to the solo-type records:

Layla
From the Cradle
Me and Mr. Johnson

Nearly all his studio output in the last 35 years bores the daylights out of me.

In this exact order:

Delaney and Bonnie on Tour...the Little Richard Medly KILLS...
Live Peace in Tonront (Lennon's Plastic Ono Band) the solo on Yer Blues---woof
Layla

Yes, I agree that Blues Breakers with Eric album is fabulous, trailblazing, etc.
But to write off the next forty years of his playing seems rather unfair and inaccurate.

I'm not sure what's inaccurate about what I wrote, I was only stating an opinion based on a preference. Also it was not my intention to "write off" all of Clapton's subsequent work after the Blues Breakers album, I do like "Layla" and the live Derek and the Dominos album. Rather, my purpose was to strongly state my preference for the Beano album, that's all.

ChrisM, I refer to your comment "his other works are but pale shadows" etc.
For younger posters who's probably never seen Clapton or heard most of his subsequent records, this does imply Eric should have retired young.

I do applaud your passion for Bluesbreakers.

And I agree with Stone-Relic re Eric's Bonnie and Delaney days, the gigs with Lennon etc.

If I were a guitarist I'd be thrilled to play one-tenth as well as Clapton,

No problem stonesrule. I had tongue somewhat planted in cheek (and was perhaps a bit buzzed after a pint of Abbey Ale) when I wrote my intial post. Once again though for those who have not heard it, check out the Beano album!

another ticket, there's one in every crowd and backless are albums that have held up surprisingly well, imo. toss those three in with slowhand, ocean blvd. and his debut solo record and you've got a pretty decent six-pack....

The ones I completely dislike are the ones he made with Phil Collins.

That runied the reputition of EC - completely compromised with his blues background.

How could a blues guitarist choose a pop / drumhammering / badsinging person like Phil Collins.

Never understood why PC became some popular - but like it is today, it has to be crap before it becomes popular and sells millions of records.

Best album: "Layla etc."
Worst Album (even if he was "only" the guirar player"): "Live in Japan" with George Harrison - however did they manage to kill so many good songs?

Slowhand by a mile, commercially and musically. "The Core" is indeed a great song.

I have one , and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned: "From the Cradle". It's a basic, live in the studio blues anthology, and sounds fantastic. The companion to this is a video called "Nothing But the Blues", which I recorded on VHS several years ago.

Yes, Eric Clapton is the Phil Collins of the Blues.

Listen to Phil Collins "I Wish It Would Rain", Eric Clapton's guitar work is breathtaking!

And remember kids, Phil Collins was the ORIGINAL REBEL. He wore sneakers with a sport jacket. When he stepped on stage for the first time wearing a sport jacket with sneakers, people immediatly forgot about the time when Bob Dylan went electric.

I'm with Shortfatfanny, Just One Night is a great live album as is Derek and The Dominos at The Fillmore. Behind The Sun for Same Old Blues, some of Clapton's best playing.
Eric has a pretty decent grip on a reggae/shuffle thing Something's Happening, I Shot The Sheriff, Knocking On Heaven's Door all have a Jamacian feel.

I would never compare Eric Clapton to Neil Young. Neil is NOT one of the great guitar players

Clapton may be pretty untouchable technically, but I'd rather listen to Shakey tearing through a solo any day of the week for the reasons that ChrisM stated earlier.

Can't disagree with that.
Unlike many folks I quite like most of ECs 70s output with it's country and JJ Cale influences.
I kind of agree with the folks who are turned off by the stuff he did with Phil Collins. Not sure whether Phil Collins to blame though...or whether it's mainlya funcion of that slick overproduced '80s thing that afflicted many artists.

Always loved this one. He had something to play for after his long years of heroin addiction. Worth it just for Presence Of The Lord and his spoken introduction to Little Wing "this was writ by Jimi Hendrix'.
