thanks about the Barbarians info, didn't know that!
Stones related: Bernard Fowler covered Neil's Cinnamon Girl on his latest album Friends With Privileges. And: Neil's bass player Rick Rosas is good friends with Blondie and Bernard.
I remember reading Neil's comments on "Get Off My Cloud," as part of a What's Your Favorite Stones Song feature or something. He said he loved it because it sounded like they wrote it in the car on the way to the studio, and that the enthusiasm comes through on the recording. I don't know about a car--that sounds like the California in Neil--but his appreciation for the garage-y aspects of the Stones is spot on, to me.
Buffalo Springfield opened for the Stones at the Hollywood Bowl, July 25, 1966. There's a cool photo of BS on the stage with large photos of the Stones providing a backdrop in the booklet with the BS box set.
Neil was in Berlin showing his new film the same time as the Stones were there for the SAL premiere, and Woody at least crossed paths with him at some point, as evidenced in this interview excerpt:
Wood: "It's funny. I was talking to Neil Young about how I'd survived it all, last night. Why are we still here? It's great!"
Neil appears to still be a fan. This is from a NY Times article on Neil's film:
'Certainly, they don't try to emulate the Rolling Stones' rams-dressed-as-lambs style. I ask Young - one of the quartet's better preserved members - how he thinks Jagger's lot look compared with his lot, and he simply shakes his head and smiles and says, a little ruefully, "Fabulous. Fabulous."'
