OT:Making Bets On Kentucky Derby Day

That's what I'll be doing this Sat. Derby day. Woo hoo.smiling smiley Here is this year's field:
1. Cool Coal Man, J.Leparoux, 20-1
2. Tale of Ekati, E.Coa, 15-1
3. Anak Nakal, R.Bejarano, 30-1
4. Court Vision, G.Gomez, 20-1
5. Eight Belles, G.Saez, 20-1
6. Z Fortune, R.Albarado, 15-1
7. Big Truck, J.Castellano, 50-1
8. Visionaire, J.Lezcano, 20-1
9. Pyro, S.Bridgmohan, 6-1
10. Colonel John, C. Nakatani, 4-1
11. Z Humor, R.Douglas, 30-1
12. Smooth Air, M.Cruz, 20-1
13. Bob Black Jack, R.Migliore, 20-1
14. Monba, R.Dominguez, 15-1
15. Adriano, E.Prado, 30-1
16. Denis of Cork, C.Borel, 20-1
17. Cowboy Cal, J.Velazquez, 20-1
18. Recapturetheglory, E.T.Baird, 20-1
19. Gayego, M.Smith, 15-1
20. Big Brown, K.Desormeaux, 3-1

Not a particularly strong group of 3 yr olds this year. No apparent superstars. As wide open as ever. No Stones related names either. Although after Tumbling Dice's adventures in the Grand National, perhaps that's just as well. Well here is my usual dead wrong prediction for the Trifecta. Best of luck to everybody else.

1.Pyro
2.Colonel John
3.Visionaire

Heres my choices.

1) Big Brown 3-1. The fav but starting on the outside.
2) Colonel John 4-1. These two will finish in the top three.
3) Bob Black Jack 20-1. This will be the money maker.

Tough, tough year. What can Brown do for you. Not much I hope. M/L favorite, but he ran 1 big race. That's it. Now he's stuck out the 20 spot. Throw out Pyro's last start on the synth at Keeneland. The most impressive, consistent horse in the field with a devastating late kick that should come in handy for the long Churchill stretch. The biggest concern is the lack of pace. Espicially now with Big Brown out at the 20 spot. If he guns for the lead, he'll be shot coming for home. That's why I like Colonel John from California. But is he just a horse for course. He loves Santa Anita, can he handle Churchill...
JJ...I like your Tri. I may spend a few bucks on that combo. I've never been to a Derby, but as a life long Horse Racing fan,it is truly a dream of mine to go one day. I'm hoping to maybe make it back to Churchill this year for either the Spring or Fall meet.

Baze isn't riding...is he hurt?

No,he just is so low key, that he doesn't really get a lot of high profile mounts. He's only ridden in the derby a few times.

No Stones related names in the Derby. But in the 9th race right before the Derby is a horse called Out Of Control....5-1 M/L Might have to head out and make a play on him.

So is Gayego the highest rated horse in the field? Why is it a longer price?

Is this all-weather or dirt? Looks like dirt from the photos of yesterday, in which case I won't bet on it. I'm so hoping all your states will bring in all-weather surfaces and reduce injuries.

Enjoy the racesmileys with beer

I'm watching but could care less about the whole thing to be honest. Its fun, but thats about it. I still fail to understand why people come here for this every year.

Gayego is about 20-1 right now. He won a key prep race,so has a legit chance. Churchill Downs is a dirt track. The synthetic tracks are on the rise though...By the way Out of Control finished a game 2nd in the last stakes race effort before the Derby. Better showing than poor TD made.

Maybe people should bet on which horse is going to break a leg?

Not quite sure how to take this comment?? If it was meant as a joke, I'm not finding the humor in it.

We placed a number of bets, many of which included Eight Belles. Was thrilled to see her run so well and come in 2nd, especially being the only philly. And it was absolutely heartbreaking to see her go down at the end & have to be euthanized. We make it out to Arlington a few times a season, but after watching today's race, I'm having second thoughts about supporting horse racing in the future.

Big Brown will win the triple crown- bet your house on it. We are long overdue for a triple crown winner.
