Not OT - Flamin Groovies
Posted by: humanriff77 ()

Ive been listening a lot to the Flamin Groovies. They did the best ever cover of Jumpin Jack Flash thats reason enough for any Stones fan to check them out, but really they are just the best Stones influenced band of all. Songs like Shake Some Action, You Tore Me Down, Teenage Head and Slow Death are classics which would not have been out of place on the best Stones records. They also do great covers of Paint It Black and She Said Yeah
Check them out if you have never heard of them, they are quite obscure but you will get a great surprise.

Sorry, I've arrived late on this thread. I'm a huge Groovies fan and first saw them at the legendary Roundhouse, London gig in July 76 supported by then, relatively unknown band The Ramones and The Stranglers. I always maintain that Slow Death is the best Stonesy song the Stones never wrote followed by the amazing Shake Some Action. Chris Wilson who was the lead singer during their golden 70s period is now one of my best mates and lives in Camden, London. He joined psychedelic surf punks The Barracudas in the 80s and now plays the odd solo show. He's currently recording a new album.
Anyway, Chris told me that that when they recorded Jumping Jack Flash in about 73 to studied the Stones promo video version and the intro even has Chris singing those 'yeah, yeah, yeah' bits that Jagger does on the Stones vid. Chris also recorded a version of Sympathy on a mini album called Back To The Barbary Coast.
Rank Stranger - there's no tape of the Roundhouse 72 show. The 76 Roundhouse one exists as a semi legit bootleg.

I have an old vinyl lp "Rockin' At The Roundhouse" (Mystery Records), which seems to be a mixture of two shows from 1976 & 1978!
Can someone post the Roundhouse gig from Dime over at Hot Stuff please??

Wow, thanks Vihelm. I've just managed to get onto Dime so I'll look out for it although my credit is negative at the moment. Will let Chris know as he'll be really amazed to hear it.

Here's a link to Chris Wilson's website. Be warned, it's extremely psychedelic and may cause you to immediately put on Their Satanic Majesty's Request.

Thanks for that Rank. Chris Wilson is away in France right now recording some new tracks. His new album should be released some time this autumn. I've heard some rough mixes and it sounds great.

I saw them a couple of times at the Roundhouse but later in the 70's possibly 77/78 fantastic live and I agree with the comments on their Stones covers I loved their version of Paint It Black.

Don't live in London anymore but noticed that The Roundhouse has reappeared on the venue list, is this the same place as the Chalk Farm one or is it a new venue trading on the old name

It's the same place ado. They've cleaned it up a bit but it still basically has that great atmosphere of a proper music/theatre venue rather than some municipal building. I went to see them at the Roundhouse in the mid to late 70s. The 76 show was the best one and one which has fallen into rock'n'roll legend as loads of people who were there ended up forming punk bands. The support was The Ramones and The Stranglers. In 78 they were supported by The Boyfriends I believe.

Very cool. I remember reading about them in Trouser Press and found the EP and some import shop. I was blown away, "Slow Death" is kind of a cross between the Stones and Lou Reed.

The "70" LP has been reissued on cd recently, I wouldn't call this an essential release, but some of you might want to know?!
