But the question arises, are the albums anymore manufactured to be listen as wholes? I mean, aren't they more like faceless collections of songs? A BIGGER BANG does not offer much drama. It just one song after other, and there is not much 'conversation' between the songs - how they cohere and reflect each other. Or is this my old stigmatized perception?

The only time I sit and listen to a complete album is when I drive. At home I suffer the DJ syndrome and just pick up and play whatever pops up in my vodka soaked brain- just imagine the mess!

Have to say that I appreciate albums as a whole much more since the introduction of CDs, before I had my fav "sides" and would stick to them only. My Tattoo You LP is almost mint on side 2. I was shocked to hear how good side 2 was once I first heard it in its entirety on CD.

Now, in the ipod era, gotta say I love the shuffle function. It forces me not to pick the same stuff every time. Plus, there are certain songs, the so called album fillers, that truly stand out in a different context.

I really don't think I've ever NOT listened to Gimme Some Neck except all the way through. To me, its the perfect album and listening to just certain parts would be alot like watching random scenes of a movie.

That is a good point. Perhash this would have deserved a thread of its own, but I sometimes think that several numbers in holy EXILE album suffer from their handlement in the favour to make a contribution in a context of whole framework, not of their own. They are like done to be played in that context. This is the thing I think it mostly do with the mixes (of which, for example, Jagger is not happy with.)

The songs I have in my mind are ones like oustanding numbers like "Loving Cup" and "Shine A Light". It is good that they have played those songs in their recent tours - I think they have thereby showed the incredible quality of those songs as INDIVIDUAL SONGS that perhaps never been rightfully seen in the chaotic and beautifull mess of EXILE... Even hit potential of "Tumblin' Dice" somehow is not so clearly distinguished outside the EXILE context - and it is a wonderful song - many - including perhaps the maestro Richards - think their most essential and grooviest ever. But it is not such a strong single or radio-friendly song as "Brown Sugar", "Honky Tonk Women" or even "Angie".

I hope that I don't sound heretic here - EXILE is my bible - but it is such a strange album - almost an entity of its own - that its shining little constitute parts are sacrifized for teh sake of the over-all sound and atmosphere. (I mean, listen the early take of "Shine A light" with Jagger front vocals and Taylor's beautiful lead all over - no back choir, etc - it is such an incredibly touchy and beatiful song - which is not transmitted in the final version which is also great though).

Yesterday I listened to Dirty Work (I had to clean our kitchen). It was very interesting. I think it's a lower quality Stones work then the earlier albums but it's still The Rolling Stones. Not bad.Steel Wheels sounds like another band, that's their worst for me.
I love the punky songs like Fight, Hold Back, I love Had It With You (But Bill's right: it needs a good bass), my favourites are the Keith's Sleep Tonight and Too Rude. And my absolute highlight is Stu's piano at the end.

Interesting remark about Steel Wheels (which I by the way listened to recently). When it was released I remember thinking that they really were back in business again after that horrendous Dirty Work. It may sound a little dated today, but I still like it as a whole.

I listen to albums daily at work. I'm always listening to my CDs which get ripped onto my hard drive. Headphones, computer, work, done.

It's funny - this talk of albums and how the songs flow. David and I agonized over the track order of our free downloadable (plug plug) album Chrome Libido. We wanted a kind of 'Goats Head Soup' kind of feel. It's only a 48 min album. 11 songs - hopefully no filler!

Some people love it, some people (in this forum only I may add) try to rip it a new one, but we did our best!

I listen to full albums every day, mostly vinyls

I read an interview where Mick said he didn't think anyone listened to one album all the way through anymore, but I do!

To me listening to the whole album is a must. Sometimes years latter a song I've listen to many times but never thought about too much all of a sudden just grabs me. Picking & choosing is like doing a greatest hits. They have their place, but they usually make me want more.

Current full cd's:
Shine A light - Rolling Stones
Workingman's Cafe - Ray Davies
Back To Black - Amy Winehouse
Hyde Park 1969 - Rolling Stones
Ft Worth Express - Rolling Stones
Smile Smile/Wild Honey - The Beach Boys
