Anybody Seen My Baby & Constant Craving

In your opinion...do you think K.D. Lang's CONSTANT CRAVING song
and the Stones' ANYBODY SEEN MY BABY is SO similar that she
deserved to get a writing credit for the Stones song? Discuss winking smiley

Here's a YouTube clip that compares songs with similarities....
the Stones/K.D. Lang comparison begins at approximately the 5:48 mark.

The refrain is undoubtedly similar but I recall an interview with Keith round about the time BTB was released and him saying that he advised Mick 'that it might be a good idea to give her a credit to be on the safe side'.

He also went on to say something like 'You can never be too sure with Mick'.(!)
I guess he was intimating that there might have been a little robbing involved.

Whether or not KD would have kicked up a fuss is anyone's guess.

yep...just to be safe....I think I also read that
Keith insisted that the $ for K.D. come out of Mick's
share of the royalties.

Obviously there's similarities in many songs (see the youTube clip)
but i also think that similarities can just as likely be coincidences.
No way we can know for sure in this case...but good to be safe, i guess.

i think the Tom Petty/RH Chili Pepper & the George Harrison/Chiffons
examples are more obvious....not necessarily that they INTENDED to STEAL
a riff but that the tune was stuck in their head..and came out in a
slightly different form..

One can go on for ever of course with examples like these. Just from top of my head:

Ben E King (Stand by me) vs Police (Every breath you take)
Stones (Miss you) vs Rod Stewart (Da ya think I'm sexy)
Gloria Gaynor (I will survive) vs Robbie Williams (Love supreme)

Many years ago I read an article by some learned Professor of Music who argued that basically there were only 3 core tunes.

Maybe he had a point.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

The Daddy of them all has to be Taxman by The Beatles and Start! by The Jam.
Even the guitar solo comes in round about the same point!

marco...funny you mention miss you/do ya think i'm sexy.......the rod stewart
song came on the car radio recently and the similarity struck me immediately.

one of the MOST blatant rip-offs (practically the entire song) is
an early Janet Jackson song....stolen from the band AMERICA.

Wasn't it Ron's and/or Mick's kids that noticed the similarity of Anybody Seen and Constanly Craving?

...but it's not that close, IMO.

Btw It's ridicilous to compare the Verve song to The Last Time original!
It was taken from the A. Oldham version.

I agree but still a nice little earner for Mick & Keith.

Only a "nice little earner" if they were given writing credit or won
a lawsuit. But..i agree...not that similar.

Yeah 'Bittersweet Symphony' is credited to Jagger/Richards/Ashcroft.

I distictly remember reading a quote from KD Lang about this. She was just flattered about the credit and didinĀ“t think it was a big deal.

Wild thought: Technically they could add it to their setlist! I'm trying to run it through in mind's ear.

Rod has "borrowed" from the Stones several times:

His "Street Fighting Man" lifts the piano lick from "We Love You" near the end. Nicky on both?

"Tora, Tora, Tora" has the girls singing (Where's my old man?) ala "Where The Boys Go" (And the girls all know) - one year later.

"Better Off Dead" is almost just like "Rip This Joint".

"Jealous" is even closer to "Miss You" than "Do Ya Think ..." is. Hell, it's even got a harmonica.

"No Anchovies, Please"

I agree that there is a passing similarity between Constant Craving and Anybody Seen ..., but it's not as blatant as the similarity between Just Another Night and Patrick Alley's Just Another Night, released in 1982. They're about as similar as The Jam's Start! is to The Beatles Taxman.

Do You Think I'm Sexy was ripped off from Bobby Womack's If You Don't Want My Love. Just listen to the string section on the latter and you'll hear it. Stewart told his guitarist at the time to come up with "a Miss You" for him after The Stones had a huge hit with it. So he ripped off Bobby Womack. Ironically.

In a related topic, Ive always thought KD Lang's constant craving should be used in a commercial for chicken nuggets.

I don't think they sound much alike at all.

It did get the CD publicity and, as they say, any publicity is good publicity but I think the similarity in the songs was way overblown.

I do remember reading that Keith heard the Constantly Craving song when one of his daughters was playing it at home and he forced the issue.

I always wondered if KD and her co-writer got royalties on the sale of each CD sold of BTB? And, if so, what the percentage might have been?

I used to think that, but if you sing the first line of last time- "i've told you once and i've told you twice" followed by first line of the verve "it's a bitter sweet symphony" you'll discover it's exactly the same notes with differnt words. They "borrowed" far to much from oldahm's version.

Re: Anybody Seen My Baby & Constant Craving

The exact story was (as told by Keith in an interview . .!):

He played ASMB at his home before the official release. When he came back into the room his daughter and friends were singing Lang's Constant Craving over their planned new single's refrain. He was kind of shocked/ worried and told Mick about this.
Keith' version! You'll never know!

Btw. I can't see much similarity between Rod's "Sexy" and Womacks song.

Re: Anybody Seen My Baby & Constant Craving

The similarity is not strong enough to justify a songwriting credit...
It's just the first two bars of the refrain...

Even though I always thought Constant Craving was a good song, I would have thought Keith would have said to Mick, "Let's cut the KD Lang sounding song from our album" instead of "Let's give KD Lang songwriting credit."
