Lol, were you serious about Bernard Fowler, HalfNanker?

of course; I always felt sorry for him, since he was the 7th Stone until ALO told him he didnt look right and he was pushed to the side.

Imagine all those great stuff in LYL quality!
Even if they ruined some songs this is really one of the best forgotten gems!
Hardly any other early live material with such a wide setlist in so great pro-sound!

Hope they still have the tapes.

Is that a telecaster or a stratocaster Keith is using during Crazy Mama?

>> Is that a telecaster or a stratocaster Keith is using during Crazy Mama? <<

it's a certain black custom Tele.

yeah Ken Regan has more shots of the gig - there are a couple on Keith's site.
i've always read that he was the only photographer the Stones let into the show
so the "far shot" must be either by an assistant of his or a completely illicit one -
i'd guess the former, since who would risk getting ejected from a gig like that for a photo??

Maybe a year or two, Bro, but mentally I'm five! I meant super 8, beta camera, someone in the staff could have hired a TV-camera, something like that.

Its the lack of footage's sound I mean, LA. Rare on private levels those days.
We have all this super 8 sequences where my mum hisses to dad: "Stop the filming!"
... Anyway a beautiful day down at the Great Lakes as well?

In Stockholm? Yeah, kinda sunny, but just kinda!
OK, got it, the sound and quality etc. But there is the soundboard recording...

Yeah, but I'm suspicous towards retro-actively edited
and "com-puzzled" footage works.

Sorry, LA, thought ya lived in the Götaland area.

This show and the show for Stu seem to be the two were hardly anything exists from. Two holy grails so to speak.

Ok in my dreams I'd like to have this show and the Amsterdam 95 show in pro shot quality for my viewing pleasures.

I think Sir Morgans is #1 on the list, followed by Stu's memorial as there appears to be NOTHING fromn those shows out there

To me the 95 club shows belong to the best stuff too! Great setlists (esp. Amsterdam) and they were in top form!
Just listen to Gimme Shelter, Shine a light, etc! Some of Ronnies best stuff with the Stones!

But while there are official recordings from all 95 club gigs and the 2 El Mocambo shows, they didn't record the Stu gig at all. So that one is out of the game . .

Hi LA FORUM - it was so long ago that I can’t provide a report with any detail. I’ve forgotten a lot, mainly because I was sort of swept up in the “I can’t believe I’m actually here” mindset. A local radio station ran a contest - listeners were to write in stating why they thought they should be chosen to attend, and the station liked my letter (I should have kept a copy). I remember the Stones were fantastic. I recall seeing people such as Margaret Trudeau (wife of then Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau) and others of that ilk up near the stage in the “good seats” but the El Mocambo is a small venue so the view was good from anywhere. I remember it being very very warm. Mick commented on how warm it was and unzipped his one-piece outfit down to, well, below his navel, which brought a reaction from the crowd. I remember him sitting at the keyboards and belting out “Fool to Cry”. I lived quite a distance from the El Mocambo but I remember walking all the way home. This was Toronto during the month of March, so it would not have been warm outside, but I don’t recall feeling cold; I felt on top of the world. Hard to believe now that it was 31 years ago.

With all due respect, but weren't the El Mocambo gigs for friends and family only?

Have never heard about the "friends and family" thing before. I wasn't the only radio contest winner; there were several of us; we were all advised to meet at the radio station, and were taken from there to the venue by bus.

Just came across this. Scroll about half-way down, there's a report from another radio contest winner:

>> Have never heard about the "friends and family" thing before. <<

i've never heard that about the El Mo shows either - obviously a very tough ticket to get,
by virtue of the size of the place, but ... anyway! very cool Marmalade! which night was it?
and do you remember Keith taking a lead-vocal turn? i know it was decades ago, but ... well, maybe you remember!
(when people include Worried Life Blues in the unconfirmed set lists, the assumption always seems to be
that Keith sang it, since he did sing it on those Toronto recording he made and then on the Barbarians tour,
and i've always wondered about it ... and always hope to know for sure someday)

I'm sorry, with sssoul, I don't recall Keith taking a lead-vocal turn,
in fact I was in such a state over my good fortune at winning the
contest, that it's a wonder I was able to find my way to the
radio station - but I do remember that he looked terrific.

thanks Marmalade - that's kinda what i expected to hear. do you remember whether you were there on the 4th or the 5th?
Chet Flippo was there on the 5th, which is when Worried Life Blues was supposedly performed,
and he doesn't mention it at all, though he writes quite a lot about Keith's performance.
i wonder if the tune really was in the set. i can so easily imagine people being too excited
to be able later to accurately identify/describe the unfamiliar numbers that were played.

>> Just came across this. Scroll about half-way down, there's a report from another radio contest winner: <<

is this the story you mean? but Keith was arrested before the first El Mocambo gig.
a rather puzzling anecdote, really. i wonder if the guy went to see them in 81.

"Way back in the mid '60s, the Stones were my favourite band. I lived and breathed the Stones. In 1966, a summer concert date in Winnipeg was announced and I bought a front row seat. Imagine my dismay when my parents insisted that I share the driving with my father on a family summer vacation. I had no choice but to miss the Stones concert and to sell the ticket. I was heartbroken, and don't think I spoke to my poor Dad for the whole vacation.

"The years rolled by, and for one reason or another, I kept just missing Stones' concerts. By the late '70s I was living in Toronto. CHUM Radio announced a contest: Write the station and tell them why you wanted to see the Stones, and if your letter was chosen, you'd win an invitation to a private Stones concert. So I sent in a humorous sob story about how I had been missing Stones concerts for years all over the country. Then I promptly forgot all about it.

"Months later, I received a breathless telephone call from the station: My letter had won one of the coveted Stones tickets to the private concert. Could I come on such-and-such a Friday night to the live performance? My heart sank! At the time, I was acting in a play, and I had a performance on that Friday evening. Not to worry; there was another show the following night. Could I come then? Of course I couldn't! Saturday was closing night of our show! Damn! My bad luck was continuing to plague me through the decades. Well, maybe there's something we can do, the radio station guy said. I'll call you back.

"I fretted for days waiting for the call. When it finally came, I could believe my ears! A special Monday evening show had been added. Could I attend it? Yes, absolutely I could! Little did I know that I was about to attend one of the famous El Mocambo sessions at the venerable old club on Spadina.

"But it was March 1977. And we longtime fans know that there never was a Monday show, don't we? Keith was arrested on drug charges over the weekend, and the Monday show was cancelled. So how did I spend that Monday morning so many years ago? On the front steps on the courthouse watching an unhappy-looking Keith Richards being escorted into the building."
