If the band decide to go back on tour, they should take up residency in certain cities and play 5-10 gigs in a 3,000 seat house before moving on to the next venue. This way they can play what they want and also what they believe "the fans" want to hear. No pressure on the band, just on trying to get some tickets. Charge us up, but that's the way it has been for years anyway. Throw in a 1-2 arena gigs to keep the tourists happy in the chosen residency towns..

Great idea. Increase already extortionate ticket prices and make the shows even more exclusive and elitist than they are now eye rolling smiley

may as well move the whole thing to Las Vegas then and play casinos to the blue-rinse mob.

and if you think thats the sort of audience who are going to encourage the Stones to play anything but warhorses, you couldnt be farther off the mark.

15 concerts in Vorst Nationaal (centre of europe)
Guest players: Bill W. and Mick T.(ventilator blues)
I guess this sounds a bit selfish

I get the feeling they are going to attempt another world tour on the usual timeline starting in the fall. Once BV said Asia next year that was the idea I started to get.

No set commissioned from the usual suspects so a bit unlikely, no?

Actually they DID apparently commission a stage design a few months ago for an arena tour in 2008. It would appear that for some reason they've had second thoughts.

Where did you get this info about a new stage set being commissioned? Could it be for the Asia tour?

I have to agree that there is plenty of life in the old boys yet. The Slane Castle and +
O2 shows were proof of that - some of the best Stones shows I've ever seen.

I was informed of this late last year. As it was apparently an arena stage, it was presumably with an American tour (of around 20 shows) in mind for spring 2008 - personally I would have been surprised if an arena tour in Asia (apart from Japan) would have been financially viable, although maybe it would have been if they'd relied on the American leg to shoulder most of the costs.

Anyway, as we know now, it's not happening in the immediate future.

If you don't want to see the Stones live anymore then fine, no worries. Just stay indor, dig a hole, hide there, cut off internet and TV and you will have no worries about their future tours. Myself I am saving my money for their next shows. They might not happen until next year in Asia but I am ready whenever they tour. Just like the sunrise is a pleasure to experience every time it happens, any time, any place, a Stones show is a real pleasure and a privilege as well. If you don't appreciate and enjoy that pleasure then fine, leave it with that, but don't take that pleasure away from millions of other fans across the world who still enjoy this great rock band. Thanks!

My understanding was there was no commission - some ideas were explored before the end of ABB but went no further, certainly with, as I say, the usual suspects! And these things are usually in the pipeline at least 15 months before the tour happen, assuming areana or stadium sets are required.

When I was in London at Mason's House I remember that I asked Gazza about the next/new tour and that there were rumors about this. He said, and I quote: "It isn't a rumor. Mark Fisher is designing a new stage". But these plans seem scrapped. If, like Lady Jayne says, tours are usually worked on from around 15 months prior to the fact, we could indeed see a tour sometime next year or something. Maybe even August of this year. Me like, me like.

A tour can also be put together really quickly if all parties involved want to do it.

I wouldn't mind hearing the hits if they weren't played the same way everytime. Can't they shake things up a bit? Getting some creativity going - many, many, many other artists do this all the time. So many song's arrangements haven't changed at all since '89-'94 (with the exception of less guitar, more horns). Would a line-up shuffle help?

Wembley 29.8.03 was definitely the best show I've ever seen them play.

That 02 show was maybe just below it performance-wise, although obviously the Shepherds Bush & Astoria shows were as special what with the intimacy of the venue and the setlists.

the 2nd O2 show last year was pretty great too. I think I got lucky last summer with the 6 shows I saw. Although some of the shows on the tour were a bit erratic to say the least I enjoyed all of the ones I was at (Lisbon, Madrid, Slane and the three 02 shows) even if the final night was a bit anti-climactic.

Thanks for your reply Gazza!

Two potential snags:

1. usual boring set list
2, Keith refusing to play the guitar and acting the "poser"

I don't really get this "posing" thing...

I'm not tired of kissing the same women goodnight everyday, and I won't ever tire of hearing the Stones play JJF right in front of me....because its gonna suck when they're gone and the chance to see them live never comes back. I don't mind the warhorses for that reason. Hell I'll even see Miss You again if they will play it for me.

Remember what Mick said at the opening concert in Boston in 2005????

" This will be our last BIG tour". So ..... (after almost 45 year of Stones in my life) there is still this opening in that remark. Just be patient (the big secret of a life long Stones fan :-) ).

Look I don't give a damn where they play, but at this point I am not sure what they do to make the gigs more interesting for them/us? If they want to simply go to Las Vegas like Elvis did, they can, but I won't follow them on that route. It would be the final sell out. I never said said I wanted higher ticket prices, but that could be a possibility if they tour again. They haven't exactly been friendly to lowering ticket prices have they, ever, except for the few club gigs that were part of the trilogy cities? I would love to see them go back to that formula again. I have been sick of them charging us up over the years, but that's their game, and we as fans can pay or not go. I would love to see them tour at lower ticket prices to get younger fans to come out and see whats going on, but this has not been the case. This band can still play great at times, but the frequency of stronger gigs is reduced and this is the direction the curve has taken as the years pass by.

I still think a long residency in numerous cities would be cool, but if you don't agree thats' fine with me. I would be pleased to see them as long as they want to keep playing for us, and enjoy doing it

to me residency has a certian stigma attached to it. Its one step away from dinner theatre.

well...not only did Elvis play casinos in Las Vegas/Lake Tahoe but that he toured the length of breadth of the US several times each year (these made up the majority of his shows every year in fact)

Re: Stones Spring Tour?

Sorry I guess I should have defined "long residency" differently. I should have clarified this as a longer stay of 7-10 days in a given city (within the context of a larger tour) as being a treat for the fans and the band to enjoy each other in familiar surroundings. Wilco did this in Chicago last month and it was terrific. They played 5 shows over 6 days in the same theater. I went 2 nights back to back and while I was beat to hell tired for the trouble, it was really fun to see the band run through so much material over the 5 shows. Pardon me for thinking it would be cool to see the Stones do something like this, however unlikely that might be of ever happening...

I think those days of having the Stones "in town" for weeks or at least many days are gone. Ten days in Buenos Aires 1998. Boston tour start Licks, Munich, Stockholm, Paris and so on. Luxury but unfortunately not likely to happen again. Except for may be a week or so in NYC and London. There are still too many places they have to visit, and time is running fast. Just take a look at how they did the shows in Australia and New Zealand recently.

Shake it up a bit? I would say no. Don't get me wrong, I would love it too but reinventing their wheel doesn't seem to be something they do. I think an example like the new "19th Nervous Breakdown" they brought out in the beginning of ABB is evidence of it. They played it twice and didn't bother with it since. It sounded great but I think they were too lazy to bring it out again.

The Stones and the warhorses are very much like how people make New Year resolutions....they start off the year with good intentions and then somewhere along the way you just go "Ah f*ck it!" and then everything goes to shits. The Stones are just like that when a tour starts. They have all these songs they rehearse and bring back and by the time the tour is over--they've completely forgot about them and are back to their old ways.

At this point, songs like "Tumblin Dice" "JJF" and "Gimme Shelter" and "Satisfaction" are gonna stay the same. They're too set in the ways to change and would probably scoff at such a suggestion....

They do the Shine A Light promo this year. Red carpet and photo session that's about it as it seems. Touring i.e. more live shows delayed until 2009 as far as I know.

Would obviously love to see the Stones again as soon as possible, but if I'm honest with myself, and sensible with my finances, then 2009 makes a lot more sense for me!! Plus, the extra wait will make it all the more special. Give me time to save some bread for some asia shows perhaps...
