I think what Lady Jayne points out is crucial here. Many 1960s people here.

Goat's Head Soup was the end of an era. It never lasts forever; the creative spark that fuels music. When writing comes easy. I love that album, but after Exile it was a let down.
To me it was just felt like they were burnt out. All those years of writing, touring, partying took its toll. A strange time for music in general, where was it going?
I was just so happy when Some Girls came out and became a huge hit. I had been defending my band with music fans since IORR. The SNL performance certainly didn't help my case, but Some Girls remains one of my favorite Stones comeback albums.

The pink vinyl extended version of Miss You, captures the whole era in a little over eight minutes.

Both good records....depends on the mood...but I dont put either in the GREAT catagory....ie, 1st 5 lps, Beggars thru; Exile...GHS & TY are good records, with a few KILLER songs each.

That's absurd. As great as GHS is, it is not as great as Some Girls.

...........oye vey..........Some Girls like Beggars Banquet, and Let It Bleed, and Sticky fingers, and even Exile are pivotal soundtracks in peoples lives.....GHS not so much. Having said that it's hard not to love everything pre TY..........

There is no doubt they are very different albums. But Their really is something special about GHS. A different kind of feel and sound to it. Nothing wrong with SG. But I think that's the album where they got back to basics.

But I do love GHS also..famtastic record. Keef's Coming Down Again his all-time best.

that's true. i speak to lots of people who have only heard the Stones' 'greatest hits' and they all regard BoB as an amazing track!

Some Girls for me a fun album. It has a feel. But if it is a "masterpiece," it is a very shallow one musically. There is less going on than meets the ear. It's an inspired bit of trash designed to musically redefine the band downwards consistent with its skills to its younger post-punk audience. The two guitar rhythm onslaught projects energy for about 12 minutes, then becomes a bore. For me, Just My Imagination live remains a band low point. As it turned out and unfortunately, this two guitar sound is what the band does best. One of my remaining Taylor/Stones fantasies is to hear the band redefine this album with Taylor. He would make it what it isn't...musically interesting.

GHS? The beginning of a long slow death, but at least musically it has some points of interest.

Ahhh. Neither of these albums top Emotional Rescue or, even better yet, Dirty Work!

but I know every song from Goats Head Soup.

theyre both good albums. To me songs like Miss you and Beast of burden are really special, not just shallow music following the latest trends. Angie and Heartbreker are also stand outs. Some girls has more focus, but GHS has that cool laid back vibe.

IMO theyre also both time and place albums. GHS absorbs is tropical surroundings and Some girls captures late 70's New York.

Both suffer from weak song material. Both are well produced.
Both come from breakin' points. Still I think I can sense
GOats ids from a downhill era & SG the opposite.
My personal favorite is Goats with a two hair straws.

i think so - i can't even begin to compare them - two different sounds altogether. it was where they found a place with ronnie. black and blue was INHO, an uncomfortable transition.

GHS will always remind me of hiking by myself in the mountains of the isle of arran in scotland - finding druid stone circles and dark forests.

some girls reminds me of driving in my car - where i've listened to the tape over and over again until i just have to eject it.

I think it's the same thing that came up a few days ago, when the '72 US tour was compared to '75: typical "fan shit". Many of us just got bored a bit with SG and digged deeper into the Stones graveyard and - voilà - GHS raised it's rotten head (imgaine Dancing With Mr. D playing with it's sleepy, dreamlike, "narcotic" feel).

Yes there are many pearls to be found on that album and it deserves special care like a beautiful ill-bred child, but - come on - Some Girls is something else: It's an ALBUM where everthing just FITS. It has Beast of Burden on it (which I put well above Angie) and it came exactly at the right time. Which is what marks a great album. And one that coined the Stones' approach for many albums to come (right into Undercover).

But there's one weak point with SG in the eyes of many hardcore fans: It's become way too popular...

GHS better music mostly thanks to Taylor and Jagger: Winter, HYL, Angie, @#$%&, Silver Train, Coming down again, DWMD, DDDDH.

Some Girls is a coooler album, (with the cover being one of their best) and has a few "better" and more "mature" typical Stones-songs (that can be covered by other artists and also have a place in the live reportoir): BOB, MY, S.

I much rather listen to GHS, it's the winner.
