American Girl
I Won't Back Down
Free Fallin'
Running Down A Dream

Nice sound - the band was tight.

Yeah, it sounded great. Good sound on my TV during the half time show for a change

I love Tom Petty but what a predictable set. Should have opened with JAMMIN'ME and changed the words a bit..... DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT TOM !!! True Elmo, the sound was nice, band was tight....Next year it should be PEARL JAM or SPRINGSTEEN.....

The audio on my set sucked for the half time show. Yes, set was 100% predictable...I like Tom, but not for a half-time show.

I liked Prince's last year.

I'm a bit tired of these "safe" choices for halftime.
How about Iggy or Sex Pistols or something next year? smiling smiley

Yeah, I don't know Edith, that was pretty bold - lol .....

Sad when the trailer is more exciting than the actual show

Thank you for that, Helter!
Really needed a good laugh right now.
Just about destroyed my TV set when the Giants let N.E. score.

It was boring. "Running Down A Dream" was the only song with a heartbeat. One of the worst performances ever at halftime. No energy, no vibe, very slow and tired. Glad I won't be going to see that one this summer.

The Sex Pistols would actually be a good choice, seeing as how they were never really as threatening as they would have liked to believe in the first place.

Tom Petty??!! I mean, how boring. I can understand the Stones, Prince, even Janet Jackson becuase they put on a a real show. But Petty?

What kind of stage show does he do? Dancing? Searing guitar? I saw him a few years back and he just stood there and played guitar. I mean, why not Dylan? At least he has A LOT of history.

They want just safe music for the fat rich white guys to listen to.

great set; great performances; great stage too. i thought they were outstanding and excitng..great mix too. yeah they just stand there; they just stand there and play the shit out of these incredible songs; benmont, ron, mike, tom; incredible history and i think they got the whole stadium off too.
and the winner is....great game and wonderful halftime show.

it was like watching bob dylan play w/out the genius, the songs or the talent - ie an old man backed by some great musicians playing slow songs.

Because Tom Petty is just about the ONLY guy who can look boring on stage and put on an exciting show, other bands have to rely on their theatrics. The tighter a band sounds live, the less they have to rely on theatrics. TP is just about the only non-animated player, along with Clapton where IMO it's the music that matters.

Well said Bluzdude!

Tom is a great showman, why? Because he just is a damn good player live,as are the Heartbreakers. The modern Band, who take a lot of pride in their sound and style. Great show!

i was at the gym and the sound was off so i couldn't hear, but i was only bummed about not being able to hear "american girl" - the others don't do much for me.

has he put out any new music recently? i loved him in the late 70s/early 80s but kind of lost track -

the last time i saw him he was sitting in the wiltern balcony watching the stones!

Even Homer Simpson said that to Tom Petty in the Simpsons' "Rock'n Roll Fantasy Camp" episode!

What is difference between Tom Petty solo and Tom Petty and the Heartbrakers?

Bluz,

This is the Super Bowl dude. It is being shown around the world. It is ALL about an exciting show with theatrics. Petty looked liked he belonged in a Vegas club show. Viewers are not looking to see a non-animated, stodgy performance. They want energy and excitement. I'm not talking about crotch grabbing rappers cussing at everyone. This show was too big for his type of music. I watched it with my girls and they were bored. They even liked a couple of the songs but were bored stiff. It was a terrible choice to have him. Maybe at a pre-game slot but definitely not the headliner.thumbs downyawning smileythumbs down

I hated the entire Game!!!!!

Petty sounded great BUT...............boring show. I mean, play one of his discs and you would have had the same thing. I want a "show". I love the Sex Pistols idea.

I love Bob Dylan but he would not be a good choice either. The chick that sang the national Anthem put on a better show.

Let's have some newer groups. The Hives, BRMC, Iggy, someone. Kid Rick was fun...let's get him out of the toplees bars in onto the field!

Petty is super cool, in my humble opinion.
Mike Campbell rocks, and the set list was perfect. I loved the stage. Very similar to the Stones Tongue set up.

Don't bitch. Rock and Roll lives on. It could have been Paula Abdul.
