Love, "Da Capo" (side 1), and Hip-O's "Complete Blue Thumb Recordings" (basically "Out Here" and "False Start") Johnny Thunders, "Copy Cats" (covers, though sadly he plays no guitar, he sings from the heart) and my fave Thunders live post Heartbreakers, "In The Flesh" w/ Kane & Nolan ('87) - a great cover of (Jeff Beck Group's arrangement of) "Ain't Superstitious" and the "Bonanza" Theme and an intense "Play With Fire" among other highlights. "Hot Spot" soundtrack Rhino's 4 disc funk box, called "What It Is" or something. Lots of great stuff there. Bobby Womack, "Anthology" (the 2 cd set) Gram Parsons, "Reprise Sessions" box another Tom Verlaine, "Flashlight" (around 10 outtakes were issued on singles during '87 - 88, and I'm waiting for all these great songs to be collected on an expanded edition. Not holding my breath mind you)
Yeah Rockman, Verlaine's "Flashlight" (which also has Jagger collaborator Jimmy Rip playing 2nd guitar) is along with "Dreamtime" my favorite of his post-Television albums. The guitars are amazing, some of his most lyrical and thrilling playing ever. I love "Song" and "The Scientist Writes A Letter", which creates a vivid, haunting mood befor Verlaine unleashes that stunning cascade of guitars during the song's final minute or two...The 10 non lp singles - "Sixteen Tulips", "Vanity Fair", "Caveman Flashlight" - which all came from a first version of the album his label inexplicably rejected - are as fine as the album itself. I have a few on vinyl, and there are I think 3 or 4 more on the compilation "The Miller's Tale"
The new 2 cd set of the debut Music Machine album (mono & stereo) on Big Beat, plus non lp singles, outtakes, rehearsals, demos - Sean Bonniwell & the MM dressed in black & all wearing one black glove '66, long before Michael Jackson, who is only slightly more eccentric than Sean...Bonniwell wrote some highly original lyrics, the amazing band already had a highly original sound...Classic 'garage punk' and I've always thought 'Talk Talk' one of the classic singles of '66. Sundazed issued the excellent 2nd album and a third of rare 45s, etc. Highly underrated.
