Is Charlie Virtually Deaf?

I read where Charlie claims he is almost deaf. Is this true? I've never seen him wear a hearing aid or anything like that.

Why shouldnt he be? Really? The man is 66½ years old,
has drummed for 'alf a centuty and started a rock revolution.

I second (or "forth") this wondering - where is it fetched from?
Not that I would be surprised.

A helluva drummer so even more in that case, I'd say.

Havin' a room on the same floor as Keith
may have done a little damage over the years....

Are you sure which Charlie was meant?
...and where did you read it?

David Grohl:

The fact that I’m virtually deaf. Any woman who’s going to date a rock musician has to be prepared to repeat herself every 10 seconds. My wife asks me where we should go for dinner and it sounds like the schoolteacher from Charlie Brown.

Yeah, not the best source...
- not mentioned in the german wiki.
- lots of spelling mistakes in 2 sentences.
- don't bother to mention the source of the interview.

looks more like someone was trolling.

having met and spoken to the guy a few times between 1995 and 2007, I have to say I've never noticed any problem, although that said, its feasible that any musician playing loud music for several decades would have some degree of hearing loss.

The Stones arent exactly on a par with the Who on the deafness charts.

Thanks. I figured someone who had met and spoken with Charlie would know.

i've never understood how these big groups have any hearing. i play in a few bands a few times a year, and if i don't wear ear plugs or some form of hearing protection... im hurting for a few days afterwards... and i don't enjoy that.

i can only assume there has to be serious damage done, like the dave grohl point from above hinted at.

most of the professional musicians are virtually deaf. Classical musicians, jazz & rock musos , they all suffer from hearing loss. It comes not only with age, but also with decibels.....That doesn't mean all musos need hearing aids.

Having met him a few times also, I never noticed any problem. However he seems to have some problems with memory - he never remembers me ! grinning smiley

The worst damage to the hearing of many musicians will have been done years ago...in the days of big loud backlines which had to augment the relatively primitive PA systems of the day.
It's not so loud on stage these days for the big acts. The PA takes all the sound pressure off stage.
