I am a fan. Maybe a super fan but definately not a freak. I've loved the Stones since I were a nipper and have almost all their albums (I'm missing some compilations) and I have a few bits of memorabilia. I go and see them about 3/4 times each tour.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Nice definitions, but as definitions are to be distorted by essence, I would fall in between. To be fair, I was cerainly a freak 40 - 25 years from now. Now, would be a fan. Law of age. If I am not wrong with what Gazza wrote, I do think that there can't be Stones freaks by now anymore or very few.

A person like this is a better Stones fan than 99% of the people who attend Stones concerts and 99.99% of the general population. A person like this is much more than merely a casual fan.

What about being a fan"atic"? which would imply losing all sense of objectivity. Whatever the Stones do, it's good because they can't go wrong. Any of you out there feel that way. That is extreme and freaky!!But I have to admit sometimes I feel like that when the criticism pile on and annoys me. The bottom line is that they are THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND in the World.

Mops "The stone Mujahideen" !!!!!!!

Whatever the Stones do is good because it's the Stones and even at their worst, they're still pretty damn great, but that doesn't mean they can't and haven't "gone wrong". You don't believe that Sticky Fingers and A Bigger Bang are equally great albums, do you?

No. I don't. But I love ABB because it's Rolling Stones music. It sounds like it and it feels like it. To compare and contrast what they have done, it is to me a matter of taste. I don't care that much about "streets of Love" although I think it is a good song but some persons do love that song. Good for them. I will not waste my time arguing against it.That is why I call myself a fanatic. I am not really objective when it comes to The Stones. I love them, unconditionally.May be it's a flaw, I don't give a shit!!!

Thank you all who wrote in this thread. Sure, the criteria for "freaks" are pretty high but I wanted to see who really considers themselves as a freak grinning smiley

Another fair criterium to judge how crazy about the Stones you are is to estimate how much music listened by you these days is by the Rolling Stones. Is it 10%? 25%? 50%? Maybe more?

Personally, I would say that it's about 10-15%. I love to listen to all the records but I try to catch up with almost every music, so I listen to almost everything from classical music, jazz to heavy metal.

fan, n. an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.: a baseball fan; a great fan of The Stones.
[Origin: 1885–90, Americanism; short for fanatic]

Actually, I'm more of a fan, less of a freak, and nowhere near a buff.

Sure. This band keeps me a lot in that way. But the freak has gone along with the 60's era. Gone with Brian and that creative foolishness, and turned out wise with the Taylor era. More respectable in some way. I wonder what would have been IORR if it had existed in those days. It frightens me

I would imagine most people on here fall about halfway between both categories, to be honest.

Personally, I would avoid most people in the second category - as should the Stones, if they have any sense.

Spoken like a true connoisseur of the lunatic fringe. These nutjobs will lure you in with a few interesting gobbets (i.e: did you know the original lyrics for Miss You went .... etc, etc), and then torture you to death by reciting run-off groove numbers backwards.

I'm a fan nodding at my inner freak.

I wonder how many people here consider themselves Stones-fans and how many Stones-freaks.

By a Stones-fan I mean a person that:
- may have all or most official Stones releases but does not feel the urge to own all singles, compilations, solo albums etc...
- may enjoy to listen to bootlegs but do not collect them
- enjoys Stones shows but does not follow them everywhere (2-3 shows per tour are sufficient for them)
- does not collect everything which is Stones related etc.

this mostly describes me but I think what it comes down to is laziness. I think im just as big of a fan as anyone here.

-fan when it comes to material acquisitions
-freak when it comes to touring (these days) - i am all about the experience

how do we define fan vs. freak regarding iorr?

-fan - reads and occassionally posts on Tell Me (once a week or less)
-freak - reads/posts several times a day

or something in between...?

Definitely a fan by the definition given.
