Mick & Keith on one mic in concert. The cool years?
Posted by: micklips ()

Love the photos of the Glimmer Twins on one mic in the early 70's. Just so raw and raunchy and unique. Don't think too many other groups ever had that 'together' look quite like the Stones. Wish they would do that from time to time. Maybe those days are over. . .??

Rockman (or anyone) give us a hit/fix of a couple great shots of the boys sharing a mic dolled up with a tinge of eye shadow and all. The best from the early/mid 70's. Also love the look of Mick in '78 all wrapped up and looking cool with hats and all that. My vote is for a return to SomeGirls-esque era sound for the next record?? Anyone share that wish?

Music on the radio, come on baby, please. . .please. . .please?

Thanks Open-g, so you took this photo? Very nice. Any other gems out there?

What is the history of how Mick & Keith sharing mics evolved? In the early years on Ed Sullivan and all that we see Mick in front very alone and Keith back in with the band - when did they start feeling comfortable moving around and pairing up like that? Probably by '69 or so I would guess. Anyone know the history of that classic sharing-the-mic look? And then when it started to fade away - by late 70's. ??

You got to roll me. . . .

They save one mic. In 1981, they had money to buy a second mic.

as open-g's and Memo's cool photos show, 75/76 seems to be the last time they shared a mic regularly
(unless of course they did at the El Mo - hope we'll find out one day!)
they've shared a mic since then from time to time, though: 97 and 06 come to mind, for example;
and of course, Keith & Ronnie shared a mic ever so eloquently in 81/82.
they know how we yearn to see it ... which is why they do it so rarely :E

and moving around a lot on stage is much easier - especially for a guitarist - when you don't have cables.
they went wireless in 78.

>> They shared the same mick in 1978! <<

you're right, of course they did. what i said up there about 75/76 being the last time it was regular
was just crazy talk. (i'm standing in for Lukester tonight.) :E

and they were three at a mic for Wild Horses too. YCAGWYW as well, right?

Mick and keith made "sharing the mic" a cool thing. The beatles did it before but it was not the same than Mick and Keith. Aerosmith did their own version of it.It seems that sharing the mic represents the time when they were perceived as the glimmer twins, a tight unit. Then starting in the 80's they became more independent of each other,no more mic sharing no more interviews of the duo.

An internet forum and mail friend of mine from America used to see the Stones a lot in later years. On a couple of those occasions, he met the same Japanese woman who travelled around the world to go to loads of Stones concerts. She didn't know a lot of English, so the two of them communicated by drawing and writing with pen and paper. Besides that, among the few things she could express orally in English -- and about the only thing she said to him -- was: "Mick and Keith, one microphone!".

Cute for the cameras, but that's all. By today's hypercritical standards, one could bet that somone would ask: can't they afford their own mics?

The best pics I've ever seen.

The one mic thing is a great way of describing rock and roll, in my opinion. No room for formality.

I loved how in the Bridges to Babylon DVD Keith kept egging on Mick when he was playing the harmonica. It seems like they're the only two that can get each other into over drive.

A real good time sharing the microphone is during dead flowers from Ladies and Gentlemen.

Also love those mic sharing moments. But if you look at those pics they seem to tell a story. Just compare the '72 shots to the ones from '75: Two men growing apart...at least mic-wise.

but never mind - going in circles is fun :E

Imagewise and best looking pirates in history: 1975 (Happy or You gotta move)
Imagewise and pirates but not best buddies anymore, coolest: 1976 (proof: Hot Stuff at Knebworth).

Partners in crime: 1972. The never sounded better on vocals. Together. This is the year of their souls exposed onstage. Imagewise its not as cool as 1975 and 1976.

1978: not the same thing. The three of them share mic. Not the same thing at all. Ronniw was their best friend.

1977: I wish someone had filmed Mocambo.

1969-1971: still learning the game.

In the late 70's an issue of Circus had a caption to a photo of Mick and Keith sharing a mic which called those moments a defining image of 70's rock...or something to that effect.

The sight of the two of them singing together is something I've missed for the last 30 years. Check out the interaction between the two of them during Bye Bye Johnnie in Ladies and Gentlemen, Fantastic.

Also, let's not forget the shot of the two of them at one mic in the studio that was used on the Exile cover.
