Correct you are. But I consider them an American band as they made this land their home base for all intent and purpose.

If I'm not mistaken, most of The Band were Canadians (Levon Helm being an exception for sure), but I consider them an American band for the same reason.

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band is the #1 American Band without question, and anyone who thinks Gun's and Rose's is better please tell me what kind of dope you are smokin.

I heard Robbie Robertson on the syndicated radio show Rockline back in the 80's, promoting a solo record he had just released.

He was taking questions from callers..and one guy got through was a liberal weenie nutcase who started breaking his balls for being unfaithful to his 60's roots by being on a radio show that had among it's many sponsors, the U.S. Army.

Robbie was taken aback, and started to say that something about how the Army is actually a good deal for some people, but then stopped himself and just said, "Hey man, I'm CANADIAN!"

The caller was a dope, but Robbie's sudden switch from Mr.American Music Lover to the O Canada Guy was pretty disgusting. He's a weasel. I don't like him.

If we can "consider" the Band American...we could also "consider" the Stones black.

Here's my top five, in no peticular order.

1) CCR - Bayou Country was my very first LP I bought as a child.
2) James Harmon Band - Hollywood Fats/Kid Ramos era.
3) Cheap Trick - Pop at it's finest.
4) The Cars - Great songs and Orr (RIP) had one of the most emotive voices.
5) Neil Young - Sorry loog. 99.9999% of his output was here in California.

Honorable Mentions.

Plasmatics - Just really scary.
Alice Cooper - Need I say more.
Fear/X/Black Flag/Blasters - Hey, I'm a SoCal boy. They're part of my teen years.

Forget about bands, the blues was invented in America, and without that no band mentioned in this thread would ever have existed.

But to play along, why hasn't Santana been mentioned? You could call them Mexican/American..right? Besides them, the only American bands I care about are CCR and Metallica (who's gonna release a new album later this year, one that's actually inspired this time..). All the other's I really have no interest in.

It seems like every few months that one of these threads gets started and the inevitable debate about whether Neil Young and/or the Band should be considered American ensues.I was rewatching the excellent Neil 'Friends and Relatives' dvd the other night and by way of introduction to the song 'Daddy Went Walkin', Neil addressed the crowd thus ( I'm paraphrasing a bit here):" Well, folks, I moved here a long time ago but I'm not American, I'm from Canada." He then dedicates the tune to his Dad up in Ontario.
He has never taken American citizenship and it bears considering how many references to his "Canadian prairie home" are in the songs.Furthermore, "all of his changes were there(here)". Rod Stewart moved to L.A. decades ago, should he be considered an American artist as well ? Ditto Ian Hunter in Connecticut. They're quintessentially British, just as Neil Young is, and will always be, Canadian.
To get back to topic, here's my 5 fave quintessentially American bands:

Stooges
Ramones
orig. Alice Cooper group
Dolls
Replacements

Funny you should mention the Animals, I was thinking about them over the weekend (right after I got back from the absolutely AMAZING Sly Stone show in NYC). I do need to get some Animals again - neat little band.

Couldn't agree with Gazza's comments more. England has by far the better bands, but the US blows em away with the solo artists.

British
Stones
Who
Fleetwood Mac
The Beatles
Zep

American
REM
The Eagles
Nirvana
Aerosmith
The Black Crowes
