Tomorrow I´m going to listen to Hendrix all day long, especially the live stuff.
To pick a few incredible solos: Machine Gun from Fillmore, Purple Haze from Woodstock, Voodoo Chile from Royal Albert Hall, Blue Suede Shoes from Berkeley and not least Drivin´South live at BBC.
I can really recommend last years DVD edition of the film Jimi Hendrix from 1973. A very good two-set DVD with lots of music and interviews with Jagger, Clapton, Townshend etc.

Wonder what he'd be like if he was alive today? A well respected bluesman still on the road?

Any thoughts on the Hendrix book "The Man, the Magic, The Truth"?

-Who knows. But he could have joined Miles Davis on "On The Corner" which was specially written for for him...

Gave me a total new view on both Jimi Hendrix - and the people around him. Who would have thought such a story would shine through after all these years?
What I've previously read and heard about Jimi Hendrix could go under the headline "The Family, the Drugs, the Myths"
Highly recommended; you better check it out, Stonesrule

I think if he had lived his career today would be similar to Clapton, Beck or Santana (his contemporaries). Some hits, some misses. Some time in the lime-light, some time in seclusion. I don't think he could draw like Zepplin or The Stones concert wise. I don't think he would have gone many more places musically than he already had. I mean really, where can you take it after that.

Jimi, still missed.
RIP, and Happy Birthday.
Thanx for fire & foxiness through years.

I read once Jimi’s dream was to direct an orchestra with many musicians, why not, electric classical music? Experimenting with sounds, certainly. Bliss he left so many behind.
So we never know, blues, funk, electric, mix? maybe a livelier JM Jarre type show including loads of musicians, colours. shapes and dancing.

Voodoo Chile from Jan 9, 1969, Stockholm

Plz note there is a book goin on "Jimi in Sweden" like the one
we all know Ove wrote about Stones in Sweden. Alas not written by me, the former either.

The first gig in Stockholm (May 67) by Jimi is notorious for that the local amusement park promotor plugged off Jimi in the midst of a song...

last gig in Sweden with Jimi Sep 1, 1970... (Liseberg, Göteborg)

Not so sure I'd agree. His Band of Gypsys stuff indicates the beginning of a definite shift away from what he'd done before..I think he'd have explored a lot more of a jazz-fusion direction had he lived.

His last birthday was a good one, though. Jamming backstage at Madison Square Garden with the Stones..

Yesterday I watched the Isle of Wight DVD of Jimi and I believe he came on at 2:30 am. Imagine that.

Its one thing to listen to a CD of a show but I just can't imagine how it must of sounded to be standing in front of a stack of speakers when he ripped into that Fender. It must be like imagining having sex with a beautiful babe and actually participating in it.

Listening to Hendrix in the West right now. Then it will be The Jimi Hendrix Concerts, a great live album from 1982.

Sure the Band of Gypsies had a different sound but that was mainly because Buddy provided a rock steady beat compared to Mitch. Buddy's vocals also added a new element. Otherwise it was simply a mix of his older tunes with some new ones. I see the Gypsies in todays perspective as simply a nice version of the Woodstock show and band. He was definitely looking for a new sound and was definitely trying out some jazz but I don't think his heart was really in that. Again, I'm sure he would have tried some new ideas (i.e. more orchestration, more electronica and computerized effects) but I don't think he would have re-invented pop music again like he did in '67. No one really has unless you look at Punk or House.

You're book is cool, but how the hell did you remember so many conversations? :-()

The death part... very sad, but an interesting read. The numbers element of his passing just seems so very Jimi! That Monika though, ferk, not at all surprised she eventually killed herself.

heres to a genius. the thing about it is that all his material ages so well.

my favourite period is the later electric lady/band of gypsys. cut to the chase - no hit singles or spacey vibes - it was a harder psychedelic sound that was based on straight ahead tempos and funkier basslines. the 69-70 fillmore east album was a kiss goodbye. but my all time favourite official release is 'nine to the universe'. unreleased on cd in all this time. to me this is hendrix's call to 'on the corner'.
