It's well known that Keith likes a Shepherds Pie but
Date: November 24, 2007 19:54

Does he drown it in HP or Daddies Sauce? I need to know because when I have Shepherds Pie I want to have the same sauce as Keith.

I was kind of hoping you'd say that. HP always strikes me as a totally British product and the bottle is almost iconic - even though it's now produced by the French.

Danone sold the brand HP (and many other ones) to Heinz (USA) last year.

Don't know how accurate this is, but have a glimmer: [members.tripod.com]

I wondered about the inclusion of carrots, until I noticed that they're grated, not sliced.

I'd also think that this was probably his mother's recipe -- pretty basic fare, but it sounds delicious.

smile: i've seen that recipe before and even if it is direct from Keith,
i have to say it: the proportions seem really off to me.
(one tablespoon of butter isn't going to get you very far with 3 pounds of potatoes!)
purists will note that genuine Shepherds Pie features lamb; the variant with beef is technically Cottage Pie.
my vegetarian version is between names right now. :E

strangely, this happens to be Dracula's fave meal(!) and
there's a rumour that that's how Keith started liking it,
when he visited Drac. But something went wrong, cause he
didn't rent them the house for shoting RFD after all....

Could someone give me a good and tested recipe for Shepherds Pie? I`ve looked on the internet but they`re all really different.

King Snake, the best recipe i know is to get the basic ingredients and wing it.
make mashed potatoes the way you like them (with milk & butter & salt & all that).
brown the meat with onions in enough fat & salt for your tastes, and add vegetables you like
in quantities you like. put the meat/onion/vegetable mixture in a casserole and then
dump in a can of condensed cream of celery soup (or cream of mushroom) in and stir it all together.
spread the mashed potatoes on top of that. make a pretty design in the potatoes with a fork if it grooves you.
sprinkle paprika or something like that on top if that appeals to you, then shove it in the oven
and heat it until it's hot & bubbly-like. if you expect Keith for dinner: don't bust the crust!
he enjoys to bust the crust himself. :E

This is just like everyone's variations for American-style chili, with regional differnces -- there are basic ingredients, and you adjust it to suit your own taste.

Note that the "Keith recipe" doesn't include cheese. He doesn't like it. As for me, I'd probably put in a bit of shredded cheddar on top as a garnish.

Rather than condensed cream of celery soup or cream of mushroom (never heard of this)...
use Bisto gravy as the base to stir all the meat & stuff together.
Then top with Mashed potatoes (no cheese), bake, and eat w/ favorite sauce...HP, Daddy's, etc.

Sorry but cans of soup - condensed or otherwise - do NOT belong in what I think of as a good old shepherd's pie!

smile: let's call it one of those Cultural Things, my dear glamourous Beast -
i had a similar reaction to the corn starch in Blue Lena's recipe :E
the can of condensed soup can of course be replaced by a similar amount of homemade pan gravy,
if someone's gifted at making pan gravy, and/or lives in a part of the world
where cans of condensed soup are real hard to come by (which includes me these days).

There's a local deli where Keith lives in CT. According to Keith, they have excellent Shepherd's Pies. He buys piles of them and puts'em in the freezer. I've tasted the one they have in the Rattlesnake inn, but it tasted like Cottage Pie. It was definitely beef, and not lamb. But it tasted good! There was also HP sauce, but I did not know one should sprinkle the pie with that. But next time around, definitely!

You need to add a generous dose of the HP or Daddies sauce (depending on what you can get) and stir it into the meat aspect of the pie. Frankly, without doing this Shepherds or Cottage pie is a bit bland.

I can understand why it's not called a "cow pie" ;-)

quite.
but since the lamb version isn't called Sheep Pie, Cowboy's Pie would be more of a parallel -
which doesn't sound that much better, actually.

ive never had Shepheards pie but I would imagine that its similar to chicken pot pie? I like those but the calories of those things is outragous. Its like one single serving of pie is 2500 calories.

if you call about 3/4ths of the whole thing a single serving: yeah maybe :E
it's not exactly diet food, but it's not *that* heavy-duty.

and for Cooking With Keith fun, don't forget the LYL Tablecloth!
